Chapter 10

The storm outside the Moretti estate had completely cleared by five-thirty AM. A crisp, brilliant autumn dawn began to break over the horizon, casting a warm golden light through the arched stained-glass windows of the grand study.
Inside the study, the fireplace crackled with a soft, steady warmth.
Seated in the grand dark leather armchair was five-year-old Sophie Russo. She was fast asleep, her golden-blonde curls spread across a soft velvet pillow, her translucent fairy wings tucked neatly behind her back. Clutched tightly in her tiny hand was her wooden magic wand topped with the sparkling golden star.
Stretched out on the Persian rug beside her armchair was Caesar, the massive black Cane Corso. The dog rested his broad, blocky head on his paws, his intelligent dark eyes watching the doorway with peaceful vigilance.
The heavy double doors opened quietly.
Mr. Moretti walked into the study. His black suit jacket was off, his fitted black shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing his chest tattoos in the soft morning light. His sharp jawline was clean, the blood and violence of the night completely washed away.
He walked slowly across the room, his black leather shoes making no sound on the thick rug. He stopped beside the armchair, looking down at the sleeping child and the massive dog.
The nightmare that had haunted his life for ten years was finally over. Sabato’s network was destroyed, the traitors purged, and the truth of Luca’s sacrifice fully honored. But as Moretti looked at the innocent five-year-old girl who had walked into his dark study on Halloween night, he realized that something far greater had returned to his life.
His heart, long frozen in ice, was alive again.
Caesar looked up at his master, letting out a soft, low whine of greeting, his tail giving two gentle thuds against the rug.
Moretti dropped down onto one knee beside the chair. He reached out his large, heavily tattooed hand and gently adjusted one of the pale-yellow ribbons in Sophie's golden curls.
Sophie stirred softly, her big blue eyes fluttering open. She blinked through her sleep, looking up at the broad-shouldered Mafia boss standing beside her. A bright, cheerful smile immediately broke across her rosy cheeks.
"Mister!" Sophie whispered sleepily, sitting up and waving her star wand weakly. "You came back!"
"I came back, Sophie," Moretti said softly, his deep voice rich with a genuine, gentle warmth that he hadn't possessed in a decade.
"Did you finish the bad men?" she asked, tilting her head.
"Yes, little fairy," Moretti replied gently. "The bad men are gone forever."
Sophie giggled, holding up her wooden wand toward his face. "Then my second wish came true! Now you get your third wish!"
Moretti looked at her—at her innocent smile, at the loyalty of his brother's dog, and at the bright morning sunlight flooding into his home.
"I don't need a third wish, Sophie," Moretti murmured softly, touching the golden star on her wand. "You already gave me everything I needed."
Suddenly, Moretti's encrypted satellite phone chimed softly on the desk—a message from Dominic in New York confirming that the remaining remnants of Bancroft's syndicate were mobilizing overseas, hinting at an even larger, global shadow network that had influenced the council from afar.

Moretti stood up to his full, imposing height. He looked out the stained-glass window at the rising sun over Chicago, his dark eyes sharp, focused, and ready for whatever future challenges lay ahead. He was no longer just a grieving monster hiding in the dark; he was a leader with a family to protect, an empire to guide, and a legacy to fulfill.
Sophie slid off the chair, holding her magic wand, and walked over to take Moretti's large, tattooed hand with her tiny fingers. Caesar stood up beside them, walking side by side as they stepped out of the study and into the bright, golden hallway of the Moretti mansion, ready to face the open, unwritten horizon together.
