Chapter 1

The grand estate on the outskirts of Chicago was bathed in the warm, golden glow of towering crystal chandeliers, transforming the vast marble foyer into an altar of obscene wealth. White orchids cascaded from second-floor balconies, their sweet fragrance heavy in the air, while string quartets warmed up in the distant ballroom. It was supposed to be the crowning evening of Daniel’s personal life—a lavish celebration uniting two of the city's most prominent names. At thirty-nine, Daniel was a man who commanded absolute fear in the boardrooms and total reverence in his home. He stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows of his private study, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored black suit jacket. His partially unbuttoned black dress shirt revealed the dark, intricate tattoos that crept across his upper chest and up his neck, a sharp, dangerous contrast to the pristine elegance of his formal wear.

His piercing dark eyes swept over the courtyard below, watching the black town cars arrive. Yet, despite the impending ceremony, his mind was entirely consumed by his five-year-old daughter. Since the tragic death of his wife three years ago, Lily was his entire universe.

A soft knock at the mahogany door broke his concentration. Victoria stepped into the study, her high heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. At thirty-two, she was the epitome of high-society glamour. Her sleek blonde hair was styled in an elaborate bridal updo adorned with sparkling diamond accessories, and her white satin wedding gown clung to her slender frame with intricate crystal embroidery that caught the warm light.

"You aren't fully dressed, Daniel," Victoria said, her voice smooth, refined, and laced with a subtle, practiced charm. She walked toward him, her sharp blue eyes scanning his unbuttoned collar. "The guests are filling the grand foyer. Your board members are already downstairs."

Daniel didn't move as she reached out to touch his lapel. His sharp jawline, covered in short stubble, remained rigid. "Lily is still in her room with the nanny. I want to make sure she's comfortable before we go down."

Victoria’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of cold irritation passing over her features before she smoothed it away. "Daniel, darling, she is five years old. She has a dedicated team of staff catered to her every whim. Tonight is about us. It is about consolidating our families."

"Tonight is about giving my daughter a complete home again," Daniel corrected, his deep, commanding voice leaving no room for argument. "If Lily isn't happy, none of this happens. You know the rules, Victoria."

Victoria let out a soft, elegant laugh, though her blue eyes remained icy. "Of course. I adore the girl, you know that. I spent an hour helping her pick out that ridiculous pale-yellow princess gown."

"It's not ridiculous to her," Daniel replied coldly, stepping past her toward the door. "She thinks she looks like her mother."

The mention of Daniel's late wife caused Victoria’s posture to stiffen instantly. She turned, watching his broad-shouldered frame disappear down the corridor. Her manipulative, arrogant facade cracked, revealing a desperate, calculating paranoia beneath. She smoothed the skirt of her white satin gown, her diamond earrings swaying, and muttered under her breath, "Her mother is dead. And after tonight, this house belongs to me."
