Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was a dazzling temple of high-society opulence, bathed in the warm, golden radiance of towering crystal chandeliers. High coffered ceilings painted with intricate renaissance frescoes reflected down onto a sea of polished white marble. Orchestral strings swelled softly in the background, weaving through the hushed conversations of three hundred elite guests—politicians, judges, real estate tycoons, and high-ranking syndicate bosses dressed in bespoke tuxedos and flowing silk evening gowns. Yet, despite the champagne flutes and fragrant floral arrangements of white roses and orchids, a sharp, unspoken tension hovered over the room.

Sitting near the head table, isolated in a circle of guarded space, was Luca Moretti.

At thirty-nine years old, Luca was the undisputed, most feared Mafia boss in Chicago, a man whose dark empire spanned from the shipping docks of Lake Michigan to the towering financial districts of the Loop. Tall, immensely muscular, and broad-shouldered, his sheer physical presence commanded immediate submission. His thick, dark brown hair was swept back neatly from a sharp, masculine jawline shadowed by light stubble. Piercing, intense eyes scanned the room with icy calculation, never settling in one place for too long. He wore an expensive tailored black suit with a black dress shirt slightly open at the collar, exposing the edge of intricate dark ink tattoos that crept up his chest and covered his muscular forearms. He stood rigidly behind a custom pink wheelchair, his large, tattooed hands resting flat against the leather handles. His cold, commanding presence radiated an aura of unyielding danger, but beneath the armor of the mob king was a father utterly devastated by a quiet, agonizing tragedy.

Seated in the pink wheelchair was three-year-old Sophia Moretti, the light of Luca’s dark world. Sophia was a striking vision of pure innocence amidst a sea of wolves. She had long, curly golden-brown hair that tumbled over her delicate shoulders, held in place by a matching pale-yellow satin ribbon. Her rosy cheeks and radiant, bright eyes lit up her sweet face as she smoothed down the layered ruffles of her pale-yellow floral party dress. She wore clean white socks and pale-yellow shoes, her tiny legs resting completely motionless on the footrests. For three agonizing years—since she was a newborn infant—Sophia had been unable to walk. Every specialist across the globe had deemed her paralysis permanent, a tragic consequence of a mysterious neurological trauma incurred during an attack on her nursery when she was weeks old.

Luca’s hand tightened on the handle of her chair as he looked down at her. He would have burned the entire city to ash if it meant giving his daughter a single step.

A few yards away, threading through the crowded ballroom with a heavy silver serving tray, was Hannah Carter. At thirty-two years old, Hannah was a plus-sized waitress working for the hotel's catering staff. She possessed a soft, warm face, gentle features, and soft blonde-brown hair pinned into a neat, professional bun beneath a white maid-style headpiece. She wore a mint-green service dress trimmed with crisp white lace, a white apron tied neatly around her waist, and sensible black flats. Hannah moved with quiet, professional grace, but her expressive eyes carried a deep, buried sorrow that set her apart from the hollow smiles of the wealthy guests.

As Hannah approached the head table to replenish the beverages, her eyes landed on the little girl in the pink wheelchair.

The silver tray in Hannah’s hands trembled violently. The color drained from her face, leaving her ghost-white under the golden chandelier light. Her tearful, expressive eyes locked onto Sophia’s face with a sudden, overwhelming wave of recognition. She stopped in her tracks, her breathing catching sharply in her chest.

Forcing her trembling legs forward, Hannah lowered herself into a gentle crouch beside the pink wheelchair, bringing her soft, warm face level with the little girl.

"Apple juice again, sweetheart?" Hannah whispered, her gentle smile fracturing as her voice trembled with raw emotion.

Sophia turned her head toward Hannah. The three-year-old girl took one look at the waitress’s face, and her bright eyes widened in sudden, electric excitement. A gasp escaped Sophia’s rosy lips, her radiant smile spreading across her face.

Before anyone could comprehend what was happening, Sophia’s tiny hands gripped the padded armrests of her pink wheelchair.

With a surge of fierce, sudden willpower, the little girl who had been paralyzed her entire life PUSHED herself upward.

Nearby guests turned and gasped in horror as glass flutes clinked against tables. Luca whipped around in total shock, his piercing eyes expanding in absolute disbelief as his daughter stood upright on trembling, unsteady legs for the first time in three long years. Her knees shook under the weight of her yellow dress, her small pale-yellow shoes balancing precariously on the cold marble floor.

"Sophia!" Luca gasped, his voice cracking with a sudden flood of emotional shock as he took an instinctual step forward, reaching out his massive, tattooed hands.

One of Luca’s broad-shouldered bodyguards in a black suit instinctively lunged forward to support the fragile child, but Sophia angrily shoved his hand away with her tiny arm. Her eyes were locked entirely on Hannah across the vast, crowded ballroom.

Sophia took one wobbly step forward. Then another.

The classical orchestra fell into a dead, stunned silence. Three hundred wealthy guests stared in absolute, unblinking disbelief as the paralyzed daughter of Chicago's deadliest Mafia boss began running across the marble floor.

"HANNAH!" Sophia cried out joyfully, her sweet voice echoing off the high coffered ceilings as tears spilled down her rosy cheeks.

Luca reached out toward her, his arms extended in breathless, paralyzed shock, but Sophia ran right past her father, her small yellow dress fluttering as her little feet struck the marble in a rapid, miraculous rhythm.

Across the room, Hannah turned ghostly pale. The heavy silver tray in her hands slipped from her fingers, crashing onto the marble floor with a thunderous CLANG that rattled the room. Glasses shattered, sending apple juice splashing across the white floorboards.

Hannah collapsed to her knees, abandoning all professional protocol, and opened her arms just as Sophia threw her tiny body into them.

Hannah clutched the little girl tightly against her chest, burying her face in Sophia’s golden-brown curls. The plus-sized waitress and the Mafia boss's daughter sobbed uncontrollably in the exact center of the luxurious ballroom, locked in a fierce, desperate embrace.

"You kept your promise!" Sophia cried with pure joy, hugging Hannah’s neck with all the strength in her small body. "You kept your promise!"
