Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary in the Gold Coast

"Mr. Kane, I can't take this," Emily gasped, looking at the astronomical number printed on the paper. "This is too much—"
"Fourteen thousand for your work," Vincent said firmly, his eyes meeting hers with unwavering strength. "The rest is interest for what my tenant put your daughter through."
He turned to Marco. "Have two drivers take Miss Carter and her daughter to the penthouse suite at the Drake Residence. They are under my personal protection starting tonight."
Emily stared at him in utter shock. "Why are you doing this for us?"
Vincent looked down at Rory, who offered him a tiny, brave smile from beneath her red cardigan. "Because four years ago, I made a promise to someone very important to me that I would never allow an innocent child in this city to go hungry."

For the first time in three years, Emily sat on the edge of a soft velvet couch, watching her daughter eat a warm meal, and wept tears of pure relief.
Downstairs in the city, however, a much darker storm was gathering.

David Sterling was released from the bistro late that night, but his problems were far from over. Stripped of his lease and facing immediate asset seizure by Vincent’s legal team, David made a frantic phone call from a payphone in West Loop.
"He took the building," David hissed into the receiver, his hands shaking. "And he's keeping the girl and her mother at the Drake. If Kane digs into the payroll archives... he's going to find out who really put Emily Carter in my restaurant."
