Chapter 2 - the sanctuary in the rain

The sound was subtle, almost drowned out by the patter of rain against the stained glass, but to Cole’s trained ears, it was unmistakably the bolt of a rifle resetting.

Without a second thought, Cole grabbed Owen by his waist and shielded the boy with his body, pivoting behind the heavy marble pillar supporting the altar. Hannah let out a gasp as Cole’s head of security, Julian, immediately stepped into the aisle, his hand inside his jacket, scanning the high shadows of the cathedral loft.

"Hold your fire!" Julian called out softly to the perimeter guards. "False alarm on the balcony. Clear!"

Cole stood up slowly, keeping one hand firmly on Owen's small shoulder. The boy didn't cry or shrink away. He simply adjusted his burgundy tie and looked at Cole with calm, analytical eyes that mirrored his father's.

"Get them to the rectory," Cole ordered Julian in a voice like broken glass. "Now."

Five minutes later, the iron door of the private rectory closed, shutting out the murmurs of the funeral crowd. The room was lined with leather-bound books and smelled of ancient paper and incense. Rain streamed down the high narrow windows.

Hannah stood by the cold stone fireplace, taking off her black lace veil with hands that shook uncontrollably. Up close, her long chestnut hair framed a face that looked older, wiser, and deeply guarded.

"You took him from me," Cole said, stepping toward her. His voice was dangerously low, carrying years of pent-up rage and unresolved grief. "You let me believe you walked away because you didn't love me. And all this time, my grandfather was keeping my son in the dark?"

"Harold didn't keep him in the dark to hurt you, Cole," Hannah said, her voice steady despite her trembling hands. "He kept him hidden to keep him alive."

"Alive from what?" Cole snapped. "I was the heir to this family! No one would have touched my child!"

"Your child wouldn't have survived his first month," Hannah replied bitterly. "Do you really think I ran away eight years ago because I stopped loving you? The night I left, your father's council voted to eliminate my family because they thought my father knew too much about the syndicate's offshore accounts. Harold came to my apartment at midnight. He gave me a passport, a train ticket, and a choice: leave Cole forever, or stay and watch both of you get buried in the same grave."

Cole stared at her, the air leaving his lungs. "My father?"

"Your father was a monster, Cole. Harold knew it. That's why Harold sent me to a safehouse in Chicago," Hannah whispered. "And when Owen was born, Harold visited us twice a year. He brought Owen toys. He taught him how to play chess."

Cole slowly looked down at the cream envelope in his hand. He broke the red wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment. Written in Harold's crisp handwriting were only two lines:

The knight you carved was never lost, Cole. It was placed on the board eight years ago to protect the king. Go to Vault 412 at the First National Bank before midnight. Do not trust the council.

Before Cole could process the words, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He answered it without taking his eyes off Hannah.

"Boss," Julian's voice came through, unusually tense. "Someone just breached Harold's private estate in the hills. They didn't touch the vault or the cash. They only took one thing from his desk."

"What did they take?" Cole demanded.

"His private medical journal... and a carved wooden piece that matches the one the boy brought today."
