Chapter 1 - the brass key beneath the oak

The grand dining room of the Vale estate was steeped in silent, oppressive luxury. Sunlight filtered through high arched windows, casting long golden rectangles across the polished walnut dining table. At the head of the table sat Roman Vale. Impeccably tailored in a white suit with subtle gold embroidery along the lapels, an open-collar white shirt, and polished brown leather shoes, Roman possessed an intimidating, commanding presence. His broad shoulders, thick dark hair, and light stubble gave him the look of an untouchable monarch. In the underworld, his name was spoken with hushed reverent fear.
Seated to his right was Graham Pierce, Roman’s longtime adviser. Clad in a charcoal suit, dark tie, and luxury watch, Graham looked every bit the polished strategist, detailing shipping routes and contract renewals in a low, composed voice to the suited men lined along the table.
Near the service doorway, Megan Cole kept a watchful eye on her four-year-old daughter, Sadie. Megan stood in her neat black-and-white maid uniform, her soft brown hair tied back, her posture cautious and deeply respectful. She had worked tirelessly to keep her little girl quiet and invisible during Mr. Vale’s high-level meetings.
Sadie, wearing a green polka-dot dress, white socks, and black Mary Jane shoes, sat on the rug near the doorway, holding a handful of colored crayons. Suddenly, her grip loosened. A bright red crayon slipped from her tiny fingers, rolling smoothly across the floor and vanishing beneath the heavy walnut table.
Without a sound, Sadie crawled forward on her hands and knees to retrieve it. Beneath the shadow of the table, near a heavily carved chair leg, her small hand brushed against something cold and metallic.
Sadie crawled back out into the light, holding a small, old brass key with a faded blue ribbon tied through its ring.
She stood up, entirely fearless, and walked straight toward the head of the table.
"Look under the table, sir," Sadie said softly, holding up the key.
Roman looked down at the child, his dark eyes softening for a fraction of a second before locking onto the object in her small palm. The moment his gaze met the brass key and the worn, faded blue ribbon, the color drained from Roman's face. He went completely pale.
He slowly reached out, taking the key from Sadie's fingers, his thumb tracing the frayed edges of the ribbon.
Graham’s voice abruptly stopped mid-sentence. The silence that fell over the dining room was immediate and suffocating. Near the doorway, Megan’s heart leaped into her throat as she realized the gravity of the shift in the room.
Roman looked down at the key, then lifted his eyes toward Graham, before glancing down the corridor leading to his private study. Roman remembered with absolute certainty that this exact key had been locked inside his personal heavy steel safe earlier that very morning.
Sadie pointed her green crayon directly at Graham.

"I know who dropped it," Sadie whispered quietly.
Graham’s composed expression cracked, his eyes narrowing in sudden, rigid stillness.
