Chapter 14 - the broken empire

Dante lowered the pistol by a fraction of an inch, his heart pounding against his ribs. "Explain. Right now."
Marco took a shuddering breath, lowering his hands. "Three years ago, when Carmela realized Vieri was poisoning her, she knew she couldn't stay in Chicago. But she couldn't leave without making sure the people she loved were protected. She found Rosa at Saint Jude’s. She set up the Zurich trust to keep Rosa and the baby safe."
"Why Rosa?" Dante demanded. "What is Rosa to Carmela?"
"Carmela never told me," Marco said honestly. "She kept that secret locked down. All she told me was: 'If I don't survive Vieri’s ambush, make sure Rosa and Sophia get inside the Falcone estate. Dante will protect them with his life.'"
"Then why did you stage the break-in?" Dante asked, his eyes boring into his cousin. "Why the ghost games?"
Marco wiped rain from his face. "Because Vieri found out about the Zurich account two weeks ago! He was sending hitmen to find Rosa. I had to force Rosa out of hiding and get her under your direct protection before Vieri murdered her. I used the vault key. I moved Carmela's picture. I left the notes to push you toward the truth because you wouldn't listen to me if I just told you!"
Salvatore stepped forward from the shadows, lowering his rifle. "Boss. Vieri's phone just pinged our network. His offshore accounts are being liquidated by an unknown party."
Dante looked at Marco. The betrayal was not a coup; it was a desperate, reckless gamble by a soldier trying to save what remained of his family.
"You should have come to me, Marco," Dante said, his voice heavy with the weight of eighteen months of wasted grief.
"You were a ghost, Dante," Marco replied softly. "You weren't listening to anyone."
Dante holstered his weapon. He turned to Salvatore. "Secure the warehouse. Take Marco back to the estate under guard. He stays under house arrest until I verify every single word."
Dante marched out into the downpour.
The immediate war was over. Vieri was captured. The coup had collapsed. The syndicate was under Dante’s absolute control once more.
He got into his car and sped through the drenched streets back toward the estate.

He didn't care about the syndicate. He didn't care about the millions of dollars or the council’s surrender.
He needed to know who Rosa Bennett really was.
