Chương 2 - the shadow of nine years

The quiet in the executive corridor turned suffocatingly heavy. The surrounding employees, sensing the sudden shift in atmospheric pressure, quickly retreated into their offices, leaving only Adrian, Claire, and little Mia standing in the wide marble hallway.

Adrian slowly stood up to his full height. He kept the folded photograph clamped tightly between his broad fingers, his dark eyebrows drawn together in a sharp line as his intense gray-blue eyes fixed onto Claire.

"My office. Now," Adrian commanded flatly, his deep voice carrying a quiet, dangerous authority.

Claire swallowed hard, her knees feeling like water beneath her blush-pink skirt. She walked forward, gently taking Mia's hand, and followed the billionaire through the heavy mahogany doors of his private corner suite.

The executive suite overlooked Central Park, filled with dark leather sofas, glass display cases, and a massive mahogany desk.

Adrian closed the double doors behind them, locking out the rest of the building. He walked over to his desk, setting the old photograph onto the dark wood beneath the lamp light.

"How long has she had this, Claire?" Adrian asked, his voice rough and low as he turned to face her.

Claire pulled Mia behind her legs, holding her hands over her daughter's shoulders. "Adrian... please. Mia didn't mean any harm. She found it in my old keepsake box under the bed last week while playing hide and seek."

"Nine years, Claire," Adrian stepped around his desk, his broad frame towering over her in the dim light. "Nine years ago, you walked out of my life three weeks before our wedding. You quit your design firm, changed your phone number, and vanished off the face of the earth."

Claire's chest rose and fell in shallow, uneven hitches. "I left because I had no choice, Adrian! Your father came to my apartment with three corporate lawyers! He showed me financial records proving that if I married you, his board would strip you of your executive voting rights and destroy your father's legacy!"

Adrian went dead still. His gray-blue eyes flared with shock. "My father?"

"He threatened to bankrupt my family's design shop in Boston!" Claire's voice broke, tears shining in her eyes. "I didn't leave because I stopped loving you, Adrian. I left to save your empire!"

Adrian stared at her, the dark anger in his face dissolving into a profound, terrifying realization. All those years of resentment, the cold wall he had built around his heart, the bitter belief that the only woman he had ever truly loved had abandoned him for money—it was all a cruel lie manufactured by his late father.

He looked down at six-year-old Mia, who was watching him with wide, curious eyes from behind Claire's skirt.

Adrian reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out his private phone. His hands trembled slightly as he dialed his head of private security.

"Marcus," Adrian growled into the receiver. "Cancel my entire schedule for the rest of the week. And pull the archived private medical records from St. Jude's Hospital in Boston from six years ago. Immediately."
