Chapter 15 - The Unopened Letter

Three days later, life at Mercer Manor had changed completely.

The dark, gloomy hallways of the east wing were filled with warm sunlight. Brinley’s laughter echoed through the long corridors as she chased a golden retriever puppy Jude had bought for her.

Ellie no longer wore a maid uniform. She sat in the sunlit garden, drinking tea, watching Jude teach Brinley how to hold a small wooden chess piece on the patio table.

For the first time in four years, Jude Mercer looked at peace. The cold restraint in his eyes had melted into genuine warmth.

"Checkmate, little one," Jude murmured gently, tapping Brinley’s plastic king over.

Brinley giggled, grabbing her teddy bear and hugging Jude around his neck. Jude smiled, wrapping his broad arms around his niece.

Ellie watched them from the archway, her heart full. They were a family now—rebuilt from the ashes of betrayal and grief.

At 4:00 PM, Marcus—who had been granted a second chance after revealing he acted under death threats to his daughter—walked onto the patio carrying the daily mail on a silver tray.

"Logistics papers from Pier 4, boss," Marcus said respectfully. "And a certified package from the Providence Bank Vault."

Jude took the thick brown envelope. "What’s this?"

"Julian Carter’s safety deposit box," Marcus explained. "The bank unlocked it today after the court cleared his estate."

Ellie walked over as Jude broke the wax seal on the heavy envelope.

Inside sat a small, yellowed birth certificate and an old film photograph taken twenty-five years ago.

Jude pulled out the photograph first.

It showed a young Jude Mercer at age fifteen, standing next to his father outside the old Mercer estate.

Standing right beside Jude’s father—with his arm wrapped around Jude’s father's shoulders—was a man with sharp features and cold gray eyes.

Ellie leaned over Jude’s shoulder to look at the photo. Her eyes widened in sudden shock.

"That... that man standing next to your father," Ellie whispered, her voice trembling. "That’s my father."

Jude froze. "Your father died in a fishing accident in 1998, Ellie."

"No," Ellie gasped, pointing at the bottom corner of the photo.

Written in faded blue ink on the back of the photo was a date: October 12, 2012.

Fourteen years after her father was supposed to be dead.

Before Jude could process the photo, his personal encrypted phone on the table began to ring.

An unknown, unlisted number.

Jude slowly picked up the phone and clicked answer, putting it on speaker.

A smooth, calm, deeply familiar voice echoed from the speaker—a voice Ellie hadn't heard in twenty years.

"Hello, Jude," the voice said with a chilling, elegant American accent. "Congratulations on clearing Reggie out of my way. He was always so crude."

Ellie dropped her teacup. It shattered against the stone patio.

"Dad?" Ellie breathed, her face turning ghost white.

The voice on the phone chuckled softly.

"Tell my granddaughter... her grandfather is coming home."

The line went dead.

Jude stared at the blinking screen, his eyes widening with a slow, terrifying realization.

Reggie Shaw hadn't been working for the Morettis.

He had been working for Ellie’s father—a man who had been dead on paper for nearly thirty years, and the real architect behind everything that had ever happened to the Mercer family.

Jude looked up at Ellie, whose hands were shaking uncontrollably as she backed away from the table.

Who was Ellie’s father? What really happened thirty years ago? And why did he want Brinley?

The story was just beginning.
