Chapter 9

The grand ballroom fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence. Two hundred guests stood frozen against the gold-leaf walls, while Sabato's four bodyguards on the stage instinctively reached for their concealed weapons.

"Don't move!" Joey barked from the central aisle, bringing his submachine gun to bear on the stage. "Draw a weapon and you die!"

Moretti stopped at the base of the marble podium, ten feet from where Sabato stood shaking in his grey tuxedo. The warm golden light of the crystal chandeliers illuminated the sharp, handsome features of the Mafia boss, casting long shadows across his tattooed neck.

"Moretti, listen to me," Sabato stammered, stepping back toward the microphone, desperately trying to maintain his composure in front of the syndicate captains. "This is a private summit! You cannot march in here with armed guards and interrupt council proceedings!"

"There are no proceedings, Sabato," Moretti said softly, his voice carrying a cold, lethal authority that chilled the blood of everyone present. "Only an execution."

"On what grounds?!" Sabato yelled, trying to rally the captains in the crowd. "Captains! Are you going to let him execute a senior council member without proof?!"

Moretti reached into his jacket pocket. He pulled out the leather-bound notebook and the sealed manila envelope retrieved from Luca's silver box. He threw them with violent force onto the central podium table, right in front of the syndicate elders sitting in the front row.

"Read it," Moretti commanded the elders coldly.

Don Carmine, an eighty-year-old senior syndicate judge, picked up the notebook and the bank transfer receipts. As his elderly eyes scanned the slanted handwriting of Luca Moretti and the signed transfer orders to Victor Bancroft in New York, his face hardened into stone.

"These are Sabato's private offshore accounts," Don Carmine announced to the entire ballroom, his voice trembling with outrage. "Signed by his own hand ten years ago. He paid the hitmen who ambushed Luca Moretti."

A collective gasp of horror erupted from the captains in the crowd. In the Mafia code, killing a boss's innocent brother was an unforgivable treason punishable by total erasure.

Sabato’s face collapsed into pure, unadulterated panic. Knowing his life was forfeit, he screamed at his four bodyguards on the stage, "KILL HIM! KILL HIM NOW!"

The four bodyguards drew their weapons, but Moretti moved with blinding, predatory speed. He drew his custom black sidearm and fired four rapid, precise shots before the guards could even raise their barrels.

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

The four bodyguards collapsed instantly to the marble stage.

Gasping guests ducked for cover as Sabato scrambled backward, tripping over his own chair and falling onto his back on the podium. He crawled franticly toward the rear exit door, his hands covered in sweat.

Moretti stepped up onto the stage, his black shoes coming to a stop directly beside Sabato's head. He pointed his weapon down at the trembling traitor.

"Please, Moretti!" Sabato begged hysterically, tears streaming down his weathered face. "It was ten years ago! It was business! Bancroft forced my hand! Please... I served your father! I served you!"

Moretti looked down at the man who had stolen ten years of his life, ten years of his brother's presence, and brought endless blood to Chicago. His piercing dark eyes remained cold, unyielding, and absolute.

"Luca sends his regards," Moretti whispered softly.

A single gunshot echoed through the grand ballroom.
