Chapter 6 - the dead woman's name

Carmine didn't shout. He didn't rush forward. He simply stepped into the infirmary, closed the steel door behind him, and engaged the manual deadbolt.

The click of the bolt sounded like an executioner’s axe.

"Drop whatever is in your hands, girl," Carmine said, his low, weathered voice flat and lethal.

Fay slowly set the black medical binder onto the examination table. She raised both hands to shoulder height, keeping her breathing controlled despite the hammer pounding in her ribs.

"Mr. Russo," she began.

"Shut up," Carmine rasped. He walked forward, his heavy frame moving with silent grace despite his age. He kept the barrel leveled at her sternum, reached down with his left hand, and picked up the yellow bank slip.

His eyes scanned the paper. Carmine's weathered jaw tightened, a muscle jumping beneath his gray stubble. For a second, a flash of pure, agonizing shock crossed his face before his mask slammed back into place.

"Where did you get Dominic's bypass card?" Carmine demanded.

"Dominic gave it to me," Fay answered clearly.

Carmine’s eyes narrowed into slits. "You're lying. Dominic doesn't trust a single soul in this house. He hasn't handed a master card to anyone since the day his car went up in flames."

"He gave it to me because he knows someone is drugging him, Mr. Russo. Check the trash in the pantry. Check the Diazepam vials Vance swapped for his antispasmodics. Luca is working with Dr. Vance to keep him paralyzed until the board meeting."

Carmine didn't flinch, but his eyes hardened into flint. "Luca?"

"I heard them talking this morning," Fay said, stepping forward half an inch. "Luca told Vance that you don't know chemistry, and that you wouldn't notice. But whoever is paying Vance isn't Luca. Look at that receipt."

Carmine stared down at the name: *Helena Corso.*

"Helena Corso died twelve years ago in Portland harbor," Carmine said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "I identified what was left of the wreckage myself."

"Then who is signing wire transfers from her offshore account today?" Fay challenged.

Carmine stared at Fay, his eyes sweeping over her face. Suddenly, his expression shifted. The hostility in his posture morphed into something deeper—a strange, unsettling recognition.

"What did you say your last name was again?" Carmine asked quietly.

"Willis. Fay Willis."

Carmine took a slow step closer, lowering the gun by an inch. "Your mother... was her name Clara?"

Fay froze. Her hands wavered in the air. "How do you know my mother's name?"

Carmine didn't answer immediately. He took a heavy breath, looking at her auburn wavy hair, the curve of her jaw, the fierce defiance in her hazel eyes.

"Your father wasn't just a construction worker, was he, Fay?" Carmine asked, his voice suddenly sounding tired, weathered by thirty years of blood and secrets. "His name was Arthur Willis. He was the head mechanic for the Corso family motor fleet until twelve years ago."

Fay felt the ground tilting under her feet. "My father was a mechanic... he left the city when I was eleven."

"He didn't leave the city," Carmine corrected grimly. "He was smuggled out of the city. By me. Because Arthur Willis was the man who inspected Helena Corso's yacht the morning it exploded."

Fay’s heart stopped.

"Arthur told me the fuel lines had been cut with shears," Carmine whispered, stepping closer. "He told me someone inside the family wanted Helena dead. Before I could take Arthur to Dominic's father, Arthur ran. Took you and disappeared."

"My father died three months ago, Mr. Russo," Fay whispered, tears pricking her eyes for the first time. "He never told me any of this."

"Because he wanted to keep you alive," Carmine said. He lowered the revolver entirely, tucking it into his shoulder holster under his dark tailored jacket. "And now you've walked right back into the lion's mouth."

Before Fay could reply, the intercom speaker on the infirmary wall crackled to life with static.

Luca's voice echoed through the speaker, frantic and breathless:

*"Carmine! Dominic's room—we have an alert! Someone just cut the power to the east wing!"*
