Chapter 1

Benedict did not touch Bryce.
The boy was eleven.
Whatever rage moved through Benedict stopped at that fact.
He pulled Phoebe behind him instead and ordered park security to call the police and preserve every camera recording surrounding the carousel.
The amusement park belonged to Vale Leisure Group, Corinne’s family company, but Benedict did not allow its managers to handle the incident privately.
Phoebe had bruising along one shoulder where she struck the railing but no serious injury. Her stuffed fox had torn along one seam when Bryce threw it down.
The toy mattered because Phoebe’s mother had given it to her shortly before she died.
That was why Bryce’s words hurt more than the shove.
“Go cry to your dead mother.”
A child interviewer later asked Bryce why he said it.
He began crying almost immediately.
“Aunt Corinne says Phoebe acts like everything belongs to her because people feel sorry for her.”
Corinne’s attorney stopped further informal questioning.
Then Detective Morgan Shea reviewed the park footage.
Bryce took the toy.
Bryce threw it.
Bryce shoved Phoebe.
Corinne stepped in front of him when Benedict approached.
Then Benedict recovered the toy, handed it to Phoebe, turned back, and slapped Corinne after no immediate physical threat remained.
Morgan looked at Benedict.
“You understand the problem with that part.”
“Yes.”
“She was no longer attacking your daughter.”
“I know.”
His conduct would be reviewed separately.
Then Morgan asked about Corinne’s final statement.
“Who signed Phoebe’s adoption papers?”
Phoebe was sitting with a child advocate several yards away.
Benedict lowered his voice.
“Her biological father signed the consent that allowed me to adopt her.”
“Does Phoebe know she’s adopted?”
“Yes.”
That surprised Morgan.
“So what is the secret?”
“She doesn’t know his name.”
“Why not?”
“Her mother and I planned to tell her with her therapist when she was old enough to understand the whole history. Then her mother died.”
Phoebe’s mother, Olivia Armano, had died fourteen months earlier after a fast-moving cancer.
Benedict had delayed the conversation because Phoebe’s grief was still raw.
Morgan asked:
“What was the biological father’s name?”
Benedict looked toward Corinne.
Then answered.
“Ethan Vale.”
Morgan paused.
“Vale?”
“Corinne’s older brother.”
Corinne’s face changed.
Benedict noticed.
So did the detective.
Ethan Vale had died three years earlier.

And suddenly Bryce was not merely Corinne’s nephew bullying Benedict’s daughter.
He and Phoebe belonged to the same biological family.
