Chapter 7 - The Silent Empire

Lucinda dropped the phone as if it had burst into flames. It clattered against the hardwood floor, Margaret's calm breathing still faintly audible through the tiny speaker. Lucinda backed away, her hands clutching her head in disbelief. She ran to the window, tearing back the heavy velvet curtains and looking out over the sprawling, manicured grounds of the estate.

Down in the circular driveway, parked precisely under the glow of the security lamps, was Vincent Romano’s sleek black town car. But Vincent wasn't standing beside it. Damian’s men were systematically stripping the vehicle, pulling duffel bags from the trunk. Standing casually near the front steps, smoking a cigar, was Damian himself. He wasn't rushing. He wasn't mobilizing an army. He was simply cleaning up a mess that had been handled hours ago.

The pieces fell into place with devastating clarity. Damian hadn't come home early from Chicago just to catch her bullying his mother. He had come home early because the war with the Romanos was already over. Margaret had known about the burner phone. She had known about the leaked port schedules. They had let Lucinda set up the meeting, and then they had slaughtered the wolves while she was busy playing with silver bowls and dog food.

A cold sweat broke out across Lucinda's pale skin. The silence of the mansion was no longer a sign of her authority; it was a tomb. She had nowhere to go, no allies to call, and no leverage to bargain with. She looked frantically around the opulent bedroom she had meticulously decorated. The expensive paintings, the silk tapestries, the walk-in closet filled with designer shoes—it was a beautiful, gilded cage, and the door had just locked behind her.

Downstairs, Margaret sat in Damian's dark leather study, the burner phone resting on the desk in front of her. She took a slow sip of hot tea, her face an unreadable mask of absolute tranquility. Damian entered the room, his cigar smoke trailing behind him. He walked to the liquor cabinet and poured himself two fingers of scotch, leaving the bottle open.

The Romano boy was exactly where she said he would be, Damian reported quietly, staring at the amber liquid in his glass. He gave up everything before he stopped breathing. He confirmed she sold the northern dock schedules.

Margaret nodded slowly, her eyes fixed on the heavy gold signet ring back on her finger. She thought she was playing a grand game of chess, Margaret mused softly. She didn't realize we owned the board, the pieces, and the table they sit on. What do you want to do with her, Damian?

Damian turned to face his mother, his broad shoulders casting a massive shadow across the room. She threatened the family. She sold our blood to our enemies. And she tried to humiliate you. There is only one protocol for that. But first, she needs to understand exactly what she lost.
