Chapter 9 - the vow

One week later, the Moretti estate was restored to pristine perfection.
The broken glass, the discarded trash, and the sour memories of the Hale family had been scrubbed away entirely. The marble floors gleamed beneath the soft glow of crystal chandeliers, and the scent of fresh white lilies and warm vanilla filled the grand foyer.
In the private garden behind the mansion, the afternoon sun warmed the stone terrace. Emily sat on an outdoor sofa wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, watching the breeze ripple through the maple trees. She looked radiant, the rosy color fully returned to her cheeks, her dark hair shining in the sunlight. In her arms, Noah was nursing quietly, his tiny fingers splayed against her chest, completely at peace in the security of his mother’s embrace.
The patio door opened, and Vincent walked out.
He had shed his coat and tie, wearing only a fitted black henley shirt that showed the dark ink coiling around his forearms and wrists. He carried a small tray with two cups of herbal chamomile tea and a plate of fresh pastries.
He set the tray on the low table and sat down beside Emily, his arm naturally wrapping around her shoulders.
"How is he?" Vincent asked, looking down at his son with an expression of pure, unadulterated devotion.
"He gained six ounces this week," Emily said, looking up at him with a soft, glowing smile. "Dr. Claire said he’s already hitting the milestones for a two-week-old. He’s strong, Vincent. Just like his father."
Vincent looked at the boy, then reached out and gently brushed his thumb against Noah’s soft cheek. The infant stopped nursing for a second, let out a tiny, contented sigh, and went right back to sleep against Emily’s chest.
"Emily," Vincent said quietly, his voice carrying a weight that made her turn to look directly into his eyes. "There are things... things about my work that I kept from you. Because I wanted this house to be clean. I wanted you and Noah to have a normal life."
Emily reached up and placed her hand over his tattooed forearm, her thumb stroking the dark ink.
"I know who you are, Vincent," she said softly.
Vincent paused, his dark eyes searching hers. "You know?"
"I’ve known since the day you proposed," Emily said, her voice steady, filled with an unshakeable love. "A driver doesn't have men like Marco ready to move mountains at three in the morning. A driver doesn't command the respect of every surgeon and police captain in this city. You never brought the violence into this house, Vincent. You only ever used your strength to protect us."
She leaned her head against his shoulder, her breath warm against his neck.
"You saved our son’s life," Emily whispered. "That’s the only man I care about."
May you like
Vincent closed his eyes, pulling her tighter against his side, feeling the steady, rhythmic heartbeat of his wife and the soft breathing of his child nestled between them. The shadow world he ruled would always exist beyond the iron gates. There would always be debts to collect, enemies to watch, and empires to manage in the dark.
But here, on this terrace, beneath the warm autumn sun, Vincent Moretti made a silent, unbreakable vow to the boy sleeping in his mother's arms: no shadow would ever touch them again.
