Chapter 12 - the architect's shadow

Eleanor sat in the chair, her frail hands trembling so violently she had to lace her fingers together to hide it.

"The tape was real, wasn't it?" Dominic asked, towering over her.

"Part of it was," Eleanor whispered, her voice barely audible over the ticking of the grandfather clock. "Vito spoke those words. But you didn't hear the rest of the conversation."

"Enlighten me."

"Your father didn't make that deal with District Attorney Miller because he wanted to betray you," Eleanor said, raising her chin with the last ounce of her matriarchal pride. "He made that deal because Miller threatened to execute an order against Julian. Miller found out Julian was moving money through an illegal offshore pipeline. He gave Vito a choice: sacrifice Dominic's freedom to federal prison, or watch Julian die in an electric chair for treason and murder."

Dominic's brow furrowed. "Julian never killed anyone."

"He did," Eleanor said, a tear finally escaping her eye. "Seven years ago, at the docks. Julian caught a man breaking into the family vault at the harbor. There was a fight. The man was killed. That man... was Miller’s younger brother."

Dominic felt the room shrink around him. "The DA's younger brother?"

"Patrick Miller," Eleanor said. "A low-level auditor who worked for the port authority. Julian panicked. He called your father. Vito covered it up, staged the car accident off the pier to fake Julian’s death, and smuggled Julian out of the state. But District Attorney Miller never stopped investigating. He knew the Ravello family was responsible for his brother's disappearance. This entire ten-year crusade... the RICO indictments, Vivienne marrying into our family, the legal squeeze... it was never about justice, Dominic. It was Miller’s personal vendetta to destroy our family line from the inside."

Dominic stood motionless. Every piece of the nightmare was snapping into place.

Vivienne hadn't infiltrated the family just for money. She was Miller’s spy, sent to retrieve proof of her other brother’s murder.

And Eleanor had played along, trading pieces of the empire, hiding Julian, hiding Julian’s child, all to prevent the truth from coming out.

"Where is the proof?" Dominic asked. "The evidence of what Julian did?"

"Warehouse 7," Eleanor said softly. "In the sub-floor archive. That’s what the tactical team was looking for tonight. A steel lockbox containing the ballistics report and the murder weapon."

"Did they get it?"

"I don't know," Eleanor whispered.

Dominic pulled out his phone and dialed the shift captain at Pier 42.

The phone rang three times before clicking open. But it wasn't the captain's voice on the line.

"Dominic Ravello," a calm, authoritative voice spoke over the receiver.

It was District Attorney Miller.

"I have the weapon," Miller said smoothly. "And I have your captain in custody. Dawn is in two hours, Dominic. I suggest you kiss your mother goodbye."
