Chapter 1 - The Vacuum in the Night

The warm, late-night glow of the crystal sconces cast long, amber shadows across the dark mahogany paneling of the Beacon Hill estate. Outside, a soft autumn drizzle tapped against the floor-to-ceiling windows, but inside the private study of Mr. Duca, the silence was broken only by the rhythmic, low hum of an industrial vacuum cleaner.
Mr. Duca stepped through the heavy double doors, his broad shoulders filling the entrance. At thirty-eight, he was a man who commanded every room he entered without uttering a single word. He wore an expensive fitted black three-piece suit, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar to reveal the edge of intricate tattoos sprawling across his chest and climbing up his neck. Rugged stubble lined his sharp jaw, and his styled dark brown hair was slightly disheveled from a long, grueling day of high-stakes executive negotiations. His polished black leather shoes clicked quietly against the hardwood floor as he paused, his dark eyes narrowing in confusion.
He had heard the vacuum running from the upper gallery, assuming one of the night staff was finishing up. But as his gaze crossed the expansive Persian rug, he froze.
Standing beside his massive, polished mahogany desk was six-year-old Mia Harper.
She was tiny—far too small for the grand, intimidating room. She wore a pale blue floral dress that looked slightly faded at the hem, her light brown hair pulled back into a messy ponytail with loose strands framing her pale, rosy cheeks. Strapped securely to her back in a faded pink cloth carrier was her baby sister, Lily. The infant’s soft light-brown hair rested against Mia’s shoulder, her eyes closed in deep, undisturbed sleep, wearing a simple pale yellow floral baby dress.
Mia was holding a damp cleaning cloth in her tiny hand, desperately trying to wipe down the surface of the desk while balancing the weight of her sleeping sister. Beside her sat an industrial vacuum cleaner that stood almost as tall as she was.

Mr. Duca took a slow step forward, his stern, exhausted expression shifting into utter shock.
"Mia… what are you doing?" Mr. Duca asked, his voice low, rough, and deeply confused.
