Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Bellandi estate cast a warm, golden glow over two hundred guests, but near the high table, the air turned to ice.
Six-year-old Eli took a small step forward, clutching a heavy gold cufflink in his small palm. He reached toward the head of the table where the Bellandi patriarch was supposed to sit.
Before his fingers could touch the velvet-lined armrest, a sharp manicured hand clamped around his shoulder. Celeste Bellandi yanked the boy backward with enough force to make his sneakers squeak against the polished marble.
"Don't touch things above your station," Celeste mocked, her voice slicing through the chamber music. Her emerald evening gown shimmered under the chandeliers, diamond earrings catching the light as her lip curled in disgust.
Eli stumbled, his lower lip quivering, but before he could fall, a broad, calloused hand caught him by the navy cardigan.
Victor Bellandi stepped into the light. Imposing, broad-shouldered, and terrifyingly composed in his midnight-black tuxedo, the Bellandi boss pulled the child behind his frame. As Eli instinctively reached for Victor’s tailored sleeve, the boy’s navy knit cuff slid back.
On the pale, rosy skin of the boy’s inner forearm sat a sharp, distinctive crescent-shaped birthmark.
Victor froze. His thumb brushed over the exact same mark on his own wrist, hidden beneath his custom French cuff.
Slowly, Victor lifted his dark eyes toward the serving staff lined against the west wall. Claire Bennett stood trembling in her black-and-white uniform, her hands knotted tightly in her apron. Her auburn hair caught the hall's glare as she immediately lowered her eyes to the floor.
"How old is he?" Victor asked. His voice was low, vibrating through the quiet room like distant thunder.
Celeste surged forward, her manicured fingers aiming straight for Claire’s uniform collar. "Get this filthy girl and her bastard out of here right now—"
Victor moved like a striking viper. He caught Celeste’s wrist in mid-air, twisted her back, and delivered one hard, resounding slap across her cheek. The crack echoed across the silent room. Celeste gasped, stumbling back until she collapsed gracelessly into a padded banquet chair, clutching her reddening face.
Claire stepped into the open, tears welling in her eyes. From deep inside her apron pocket, she pulled out a worn, yellowed hospital envelope.
"Your family told me you never wanted him," Claire whispered, her voice trembling.
Victor took the envelope, tore open the seal, and pulled out the birth record. In bold ink, listed under the child's father, was his own name: *Victor Bellandi*.
Victor’s gaze lifted, ice-cold and murderous. "Who in my family paid you to disappear?"

Celeste slowly stepped backward into the shadows of the banquet hall.
