Chapter 1 - The Shattered Porcelain

The midday sun poured through the towering windows of the Romano mansion, casting long, sharp shadows across the glossy white marble floors. The room was breathtakingly quiet, save for the soft patter of tiny shoes. Little Sofia, only fourteen months old, toddled across the room. Her delicate pale pink sleeveless dress fluttered slightly as she giggled, her bright eyes locked on a large, ornate porcelain vase resting on a carved gold pedestal. A few feet away stood Camilla, an elegant blonde woman in her early forties. Her fitted burgundy silk dress clung to her frame, her diamond earrings catching the light. She was speaking in hushed, hurried tones to Marco, a dark-haired man in an expensive charcoal suit. Their conversation was tense, secretive. Sofia reached up with a tiny, curious hand. Her fingers brushed the edge of the heavy vase. It tilted. The shift in weight was silent at first, then catastrophic. The porcelain crashed onto the marble floor, the sound echoing like a gunshot through the mansion. Sofia froze in surprise. From the broken base of the vase, a yellowed, sealed envelope slid out across the polished stone. Camilla spun around, her eyes widening in horror. She rushed forward and furiously slapped the baby’s hand away from the pedestal. Sofia’s lower lip quivered before she burst into terrified tears. But Camilla wasn't looking at the crying child. She was staring at the mysterious envelope on the floor. Her face drained of all color. Footsteps thundered down the hallway. Domenico Romano appeared in the doorway. In his late thirties, the Italian-American Mafia boss was an imposing figure. His thick dark wavy hair and muscular build, wrapped in a perfectly tailored black suit, demanded immediate submission. Seeing Sofia crying, Domenico rushed forward and protectively scooped the baby girl into his arms. He turned his fierce, dark eyes toward Camilla. "Stay away from my niece," he growled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. Before Camilla could reply, Marco lunged toward the scattered porcelain, his hand reaching desperately for the envelope. Domenico was faster. While holding Sofia securely against his chest, he bent down and snatched the yellowed paper from the floor. Marco froze, his chest heaving, a bead of sweat forming on his sharp jawline. "Give me that envelope," Marco demanded, his voice shaking with forced authority. Domenico ignored him. He slid his thumb under the seal, tearing it open. Camilla stepped forward, her perfectly manicured hands reaching out in pure desperation. "Don't open it!" she screamed. Domenico pulled out a brittle, folded document. His eyes scanned the text. The room seemed to pull the air from his lungs. His expression turned deathly pale. He looked up slowly, his gaze shifting from the paper to Camilla, then to Marco. "Why is my name on this?" Domenico whispered.
