Chapter 11 - THE SISTER DANIEL STOPPED CALLING

Margaret arrived the following afternoon.

Fifty-one.

Elegant.

Sharp.

And angry enough to make Daniel feel twelve years old again.

She entered the mansion.

Looked at her brother.

Then slapped him.

Natalie froze.

Daniel did not move.

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“That was for four years.”

Daniel rubbed his cheek.

“Fair.”

Then she hugged him.

Hard.

“That was because you’re my idiot brother.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I missed you.”

“I know.”

Lucas watched from the staircase.

Margaret saw him.

Her expression broke.

“My God.”

Lucas did not remember her.

Daniel felt another wave of shame.

Family had vanished from Lucas’s life in more ways than one.

Margaret knelt.

“I’m your Aunt Margaret.”

Lucas looked at Daniel.

“Does she stay?”

Margaret’s face changed.

Daniel answered carefully.

“She lives in California.”

Lucas looked disappointed.

Margaret understood immediately.

“I have to go home sometimes.”

She smiled.

“But I don’t disappear.”

Lucas studied her.

“Promise?”

Margaret looked at Daniel before answering.

“I promise I’ll say goodbye.”

Lucas accepted that.

They talked privately afterward.

Margaret carried a folder.

“Grace mailed this to me two weeks before she went into hospice.”

Daniel opened it.

Copies of staffing invoices.

Emails.

Notes about Thomas.

A photograph of Evelyn meeting Dr. Malcolm Reeve outside a hotel.

Daniel frowned.

“Why didn’t you give me this?”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“I tried.”

“When?”

“At the funeral.”

Daniel remembered arguing.

Margaret had accused him of turning the house into a corporation.

Daniel had told her to leave.

“I didn’t know.”

“No.”

She stared at him.

“You didn’t want to know anything that made grief harder.”

He could not argue.

Margaret continued.

“I emailed.”

“Filtered.”

“I called.”

“Evelyn told me you didn’t want contact.”

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

“She said my presence destabilized Lucas.”

Of course.

Margaret’s anger returned.

“Then I got a letter from your attorneys warning me not to interfere in household matters.”

“I never authorized that.”

“I know that now.”

Thomas.

Perhaps Evelyn.

Perhaps both.

Daniel looked through the folder.

One document stood out.

A bank transfer to Briar House Consulting dated before Grace died.

Recipient authorization:

T.K.

But handwritten beside it:

E.H. says M.R. will revise report after meeting.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“Who is M.R.?”

“Malcolm Reeve.”

She opened another envelope.

A recording device.

“Grace gave me this.”

“What’s on it?”

“I never listened.”

“Why?”

“She told me not to unless something happened to Lucas.”

Daniel stared.

Something had happened.

They played the file.

Grace’s weak voice filled the room.

“If Daniel hears this, then I probably failed to tell him myself.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

Grace continued:

“Evelyn believes she knows what is best for Lucas. Thomas believes money can justify almost anything. But I think there is someone above Thomas.”

Everyone became still.

“I heard him on the phone. He said, ‘Briar House answers to the trust, not to you.’ I don’t know which trust.”

A cough.

Then:

“If I’m wrong, destroy this. If I’m right, please do not let Daniel turn this into revenge. Make him stay with Lucas.”

The recording ended.

Margaret wiped tears away.

Daniel looked down.

Even dying, Grace had predicted him.

Natalie whispered:

“Someone above Thomas.”

Detective Mason nodded.

“The unidentified third account.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message.

From Thomas Keene.

One sentence.

I’m alive.

Then another.

Evelyn has Grace’s journal.

Then a location pin.

An abandoned property outside Lake Geneva.

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“You’re not going alone.”

Daniel almost said he was.

Then heard Grace’s voice in his head.

Make him stay with Lucas.

He called Detective Mason.

Not security.

Not his own men.

Police.

That choice surprised everyone.

Including him.

Two hours later, authorities surrounded the abandoned property.

Thomas was inside.

Alive.

So was Evelyn.

But when police entered, Grace’s blue journal was gone.

And Evelyn was pointing a gun at Thomas.
