Chapter 5 - ADRIAN HARROW

Adrian Harrow was alive.

That irritated Victor.

Not because he intended violence.

Because dead suspects were easier emotionally.

Adrian had reinvented himself.

Fifty-two.

Commercial-security consultant in Arizona.

No recent convictions.

Publicly respectable.

Privately connected to enough old names that federal investigators still knew him.

Grace made the call.

Adrian hung up.

Second call came from his attorney.

Good.

Everyone had attorneys now.

Victor appreciated the efficiency.

Old records showed Adrian had indeed been in Chicago the week Ellie was born.

One parking receipt placed him near the hospital.

Not enough.

Then Marco’s private files produced an old photograph.

Adrian entering Celestine’s car.

Date:

Birth night.

Victor felt another piece lock into place.

Why was Celestine meeting Harrow?

Debt.

She had lost nearly $900,000 in private investments.

Marco did not know.

Harrow offered short-term financing.

In return:

information.

Guest lists.

Victor’s travel.

Security vendor names.

Nothing Celestine believed would hurt children.

That was her later defense.

Victor did not find it comforting.

Adrian’s attorney eventually arranged an interview with investigators after old extortion matters surfaced.

Victor did not attend.

He received summaries.

Adrian admitted copying Marco’s hospital credential.

He claimed he did not enter the neonatal floor himself.

He gave the copy to another man.

Who?

He refused initially.

Then prosecutors found leverage involving unrelated fraud.

The name emerged:

Paul Rainer.

Former Harrow associate.

Dead six years.

Scar near left ear.

Helen’s description matched.

Rainer had entered the hospital.

Why?

Adrian claimed:

“To photograph the child.”

Victor stared when Grace told him.

“Photograph.”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“To prove leverage.”

Against Victor.

Harrow’s father wanted evidence that Victor’s newborn could be reached.

Not necessarily abduct her.

That distinction mattered legally.

Not emotionally.

Victor walked away from the table.

Grace let him.

Then:

“Come back when you can hear the rest.”

He did.

Rainer tried the nursery door.

Helen interrupted.

No evidence he ever touched Ellie.

The threat phone call likely came from another Harrow associate.

The purpose:

frighten Isabella.

Demonstrate vulnerability.

Pressure Victor later.

But the plan collapsed because Isabella hid the baby before Harrow could use the photograph.

That explained the Whitaker identity completely.

Then Grace added:

“Harrow says Celestine did not know the plan.”

Victor looked up.

“Do you believe him?”

“I believe evidence more than him.”

Records supported that Celestine knew she was selling information.

No proof she knew a child would be targeted.

But after the event she lied.

For eight years.

Then destroyed Isabella’s things when evidence resurfaced.

That became the next question.

Why now?

Celestine could have let old history die.

Instead she smashed boxes.

Removed photographs.

Searched drawers.

Grace found the answer in financial discovery connected to Marco’s estate.

A trust.

Marco had left Celestine substantial money.

But one clause:

If evidence emerged that Celestine knowingly concealed actions endangering a Morello child, a large portion reverted to Ellie’s protective trust.

Victor stared.

“Marco wrote that?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Two years before he died.”

He had learned enough.

He loved his wife.

He also protected his niece.

Celestine’s financial security depended on the past staying buried.

Now Isabella’s portrait had cracked open the evidence.

Victor almost laughed.

“Dead women do belong at the table.”

Grace frowned.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

Then a third Isabella envelope surfaced from the compartment.

Victor opened it.

Victor,

If you now know about Harrow, stop.

Do not assume the worst part is over.

Celestine’s lie explains the nursery.

It does not explain why somebody began searching my things again three years later.

Victor’s heartbeat changed.

Three years after Ellie’s birth.

Five years before the gala.

Isabella had noticed someone entering her office.

Moving photographs.

Opening drawers.

She suspected Celestine.

But why?

The next line:

I found something Marco hid after confronting Harrow.

Something he never showed you.

It concerns the day he died.

May you like

Victor stared.

His brother’s “accident” had just returned to the story.
