Chapter 7

Rocco began examining his own failure.

That irritated everyone around him because they wanted Adelaide to carry the whole moral burden.

She did carry the burden for what she had done.

But Rocco had spent years creating a family structure where uncomfortable information arrived only when someone powerful decided it should.

Gabriel once complained about Adelaide’s aviation decisions.

Rocco remembered the conversation now.

“Your cousin thinks every maintenance delay is a personal insult.”

Rocco had laughed.

“Then fight with her.”

Gabriel answered:

“I do.”

Rocco never asked what the fight concerned.

After the crash, he accepted Adelaide’s summary that civil matters were “handled.”

When Sophie disappeared from view, he accepted the explanation that Gabriel’s relationship had ended.

When June arrived, Rocco acted decisively.

Before then, he had acted lazily.

Daniel told him:

“You were grieving.”

Rocco shook his head.

“I was busy.”

“That too.”

“I’m not using either as an excuse.”

Then the guardian ad litem asked him to produce every communication he had with Gabriel during the month before the crash.

Rocco’s criminal attorney objected.

Some messages mixed aviation issues with unrelated family matters and people under law-enforcement scrutiny.

Producing everything could open doors far beyond June’s case.

The attorney proposed a narrow privilege and relevance review.

That was legally ordinary.

Rocco agreed to lawful review.

He did not agree to deletion.

Then one message surfaced.

Gabriel to Rocco:

If I’m gone Friday, ask why Adelaide needed 407 in the air.

Rocco stared at it.

He had never opened that message.

It arrived during a meeting.

He saw Gabriel’s name on the screen.

Told himself he would respond later.

Gabriel died the next day.

The message had remained unread in an archived device backup for seven months.

Rocco sat alone for nearly an hour after seeing it.

The line did not prove Adelaide caused the crash.

It proved Gabriel himself was worried enough to tell Rocco where to look.

Then another message appeared fifteen minutes later.

Gabriel:

Also Sophie. Don’t let family make her a scandal.

Two concerns.

Same brother.

Same night.

Aircraft.

Pregnancy.

Rocco had missed both.

That became the personal center of the case.

Adelaide had hidden information.

May you like

Rocco had also been the person Gabriel reached toward before dying.

He simply had not looked in time.
