Chapter 17 - The Arden House Problem Becomes Public Too

Camille’s coercive message was not immediately public.
The criminal investigation was.
Eventually charges were filed.
One count related to the assault on Livia.
Another under the state’s coercion/extortion framework based on the recorded demand.
The exact legal theory focused on threatening to expose damaging information unless I influenced a multimillion-dollar business decision and backed away from legal consequences.
Arden House lenders noticed.
So did investors.
Camille’s financing collapsed.
Not because I called anyone.
Disclosure obligations and press did enough.
The estate entered a financial restructuring process.
For months, Camille blamed me.
Then the numbers forced a harder conclusion.
The project had been undercapitalized before the birthday.
Our investment committee had been right.
Her proposed hotel depended on:
Optimistic event revenue.
Too little contingency.
Large debt.
Preservation costs no spreadsheet could make disappear.
Eventually Camille listed Arden House for sale.
That was devastating to her.
I did not enjoy it.
That surprised some relatives.
My mother understood.
“A house can be a person’s proof that the past happened,” she said.
“You feel sorry for her?”
“I can feel sorry for someone and still want her kept away from my great-grandchild.”
Livia corrected from the doorway:
“Grandchild.”
Helena turned.
“What did I say?”
“Great.”
“I am not that old.”
She was seventy-six.
Livia laughed.
The sale became a quieter tragedy beside the criminal case.
Camille had tied her identity to saving the estate.
When she could not, she lost more than real estate.
She lost the project she believed would vindicate her father’s sacrifices and her own social position.
That did not excuse her.
But villains without losses are cartoons.
Camille was not a cartoon.
She was an adult woman who made cruel and criminal choices while terrified of losing the structure around which she had built herself.
Understanding that made the consequences more coherent.
May you like
Not smaller.
