Chapter 1

Claire did not throw another punch.

The moment Lily was against her chest, the fight was over.

She carried the screaming toddler away from Daniel and Margaret and shouted toward the guests:

“Call 911.”

Daniel pushed himself out of the collapsed party chair.

“This is my house.”

Claire backed toward the lawn.

“And she is a baby.”

Margaret was getting up beside the banquet table.

Red juice streaked Claire’s face.

Her cheek was swelling where Margaret had slapped her.

Daniel’s nose was bleeding.

Margaret had a cut along one eyebrow from striking the ground after Claire’s punch.

Nobody looked good.

That mattered later.

Claire had not arrived expecting a fight.

She had also hit two people.

Police would review all of it.

Then one of the birthday guests pointed toward the porch.

The chain.

It was still attached to the post.

One end had been looped around Lily’s waist over her pink dress.

Loose enough not to injure her immediately.

Tight enough to stop a fifteen-month-old child from wandering more than a few feet.

Officer Mason Reed arrived first.

He froze when he saw it.

“Whose idea was that?”

Daniel answered:

“She kept running toward the pool.”

Claire stared at him.

“The pool is fenced.”

“She was getting into everything.”

“So you chained your daughter to a post?”

Margaret cut in.

“She is not his daughter.”

Claire looked down at the sealed envelope lying beside the grass.

“Funny.”

A paramedic examined Lily.

No serious physical injury.

Redness around her waist.

Dirty knees.

Signs she had been crying for an extended period.

The worst problem was behavioral.

Every time Daniel moved closer, Lily buried her face in Claire’s shoulder.

Mason asked:

“Who is the child’s legal guardian right now?”

Claire answered:

“I am her temporary court-approved kinship caregiver.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Temporary.”

“Yes.”

“You had no right to bring her here with that stunt in your pocket.”

Claire looked toward the DNA report.

“You asked for a supervised family visit.”

That silenced several guests.

The birthday party had not been random.

Daniel had requested two hours of contact with Lily while his paternity case was still pending.

Claire agreed because the family court allowed supervised contact as long as Claire remained present.

She had stepped inside the mansion for less than seven minutes to answer a call from Lily’s guardian ad litem.

When she returned, Lily was restrained outside.

Margaret was standing ten feet away.

Daniel was inside with the guests.

Mason asked:

“Who attached the chain?”

Claire answered:

“I didn’t see it happen.”

Daniel said:

“It wasn’t hurting her.”

That was not an answer.

Then Lily, still sobbing, pointed toward Margaret.

“Grandma mad.”

Margaret’s face tightened.

“She doesn’t know what that word means.”

Claire answered:

“She knows you.”

Civilian detectives arrived.

So did child-protective services.

Claire voluntarily handed over the sealed report.

“It may matter to the custody case.”

Detective Nora Whitfield examined the envelope.

Certified laboratory copy.

Collection date:

Sixteen months earlier.

Before Lily was born.

Testing type:

Prenatal paternity analysis.

Alleged father:

Daniel Whitmore.

Probability of paternity:

Greater than 99.99%.

Nora looked at Daniel.

“You already took a DNA test?”

Daniel’s face changed.

Claire watched Margaret.

That deathly pallor returned.

May you like

Not surprise.

Recognition.
