Chapter 6

Celeste’s motive looked simple at first.
Jealousy.
A hidden child would change her marriage.
A foster child with proof would embarrass her.
A daughter from Victor’s past might threaten her place.
All true.
None complete.
Detective Vale found a folder titled:
Family Continuity — Scenario E.
Inside were draft public statements.
One said:
Celeste Marcelli reunites Victor with child he never knew existed.
Another said:
Marcelli Family Outreach helps lost daughter come home.
A third said:
New Marcelli bride leads healing after painful family revelation.
The drafts were dated six months before the banquet.
Before Ellie came to the party.
Before the music box broke.
Before Victor knew.
Celeste had not merely hidden Ellie.
She had been planning a reveal.
The question was timing.
Why not tell Victor earlier?
The answer sat in another folder:
Post-marital asset structure.
Celeste and Victor were not married yet.
Their prenuptial agreement was under negotiation.
The Marcelli Legacy Trust had a clause requiring immediate review of beneficiary structures if Victor acknowledged any biological child.
That review could freeze certain transfers, restrict spousal access to trust-controlled assets, and appoint an independent trustee for minor-child interests.
Celeste wanted the marital structure signed first.
Then she could reveal Ellie as a managed emotional event.
She would become rescuer.
Stepmother.
Public stabilizer.
The woman who brought Victor’s lost child home.
If Ellie appeared too soon, everything froze before Celeste got access.
If Ellie appeared too late, someone else might find the letter.
The banquet was not supposed to be the reveal.
It was supposed to be a donor event.

Ellie was supposed to sit far away, bring no personal items, and leave unseen.
The music box broke the schedule.
