Chapter 24 - Miranda as a Mother

Miranda’s relationship with Luca became the hardest issue to discuss honestly.
She had done something terrible to Daphne.
She was still Luca’s mother.
After her brief custody period and release? Better "after county custody", she resumed supervised parenting time. Before custody perhaps limited supervised contact. Let's describe.
During the months before sentencing, Miranda had supervised visits with Luca under temporary order.
After serving custody, the court gradually restored structured contact based on evaluations.
Initially:
Two supervised visits each week.
Then longer daytime periods.
No overnights.
Parenting coordinator.
No contact with Daphne.
Miranda was attentive with Luca.
Fed him.
Changed him.
Held him when he cried.
No evidence she harmed him.
That complicated family narratives.
Some relatives wanted me to seek termination of parental rights immediately.
Grounds did not simply appear because she assaulted another child.
And I did not want to use my wealth to erase Luca’s mother if the law and professionals found a path to safe parenting.
Others said:
If she can mother Luca, forgive what happened to Daphne.
Also wrong.
Humans can be safe in one relationship and unsafe in another.
They can change partially.
Boundaries can differ.
At two, Luca began spending one overnight every other weekend with Miranda after a lengthy period of compliance and professional approval.
Daphne knew.
She asked:
“Why he can go?”
“Because Miranda is his mom and adults decided it’s safe for him with rules.”
“Wasn’t safe for me.”
“No.”
“Not fair.”
“No.”
Sometimes truth does not make children feel better.

I did not force it to.
