Chapter 1 - THE CARRIAGE AT THE STAIRS

Victor Santoro saw the carriage move before he understood why.
One moment, Baby Lily slept beneath a cream blanket beside a towering arrangement of white roses.
The next, the wheels began turning.
Slowly at first.
Then faster.
Toward the staircase.
Victor’s hand tightened around the champagne glass he had never intended to drink.
Guests filled the marble reception hall of the Santoro estate.
Music played beneath crystal chandeliers.
Men in black tuxedos spoke quietly near the windows.
Women in evening gowns laughed beside tables covered in white orchids and silver candles.
At the top of the stairs stood Adriana.
His fiancée.
White gown.
Diamonds.
One hand still extended toward the carriage.
Victor understood.
“Lily!”
He moved.
The champagne glass shattered behind him.
Victor crossed the lower landing just as the front wheels reached the first stair.
He caught the handle.
The carriage tilted.
For one terrible second, Victor saw only white fabric and the edge of the staircase.
Then he pulled backward.
Hard.
The carriage rolled safely against the wall.
Lily stirred.
Made a tiny sound.
Then continued sleeping.
Victor stood over her, one hand still gripping the handle.
His heart hammered harder than it had during gunfire.
“Boss?”
His security chief, Anthony Russo, rushed forward.
Victor lifted Lily from the carriage himself.
He checked her face.
Her hands.
Her breathing.
Perfect.
Safe.
Only then did he look up.
Adriana remained at the top of the stairs.
She did not look shocked.
She did not look apologetic.
She looked annoyed.
Victor handed Lily carefully to Anthony.
“Take her to Rosa.”
Anthony nodded.
“No one gets near her.”
“Understood.”
Victor climbed the stairs.
Guests moved aside without being told.
The music had stopped.
Adriana’s eyes stayed on him.
“You made quite a scene.”
Victor stopped one step below her.
“You released the brake.”
She shrugged.
“The carriage moved.”
“You pushed it.”
No answer.
His voice dropped.
“Why?”
Adriana glanced toward the hallway where Anthony disappeared with Lily.
Then she whispered:
“No baby steals my future.”
The sentence entered Victor’s mind slowly.
He had known Adriana was ambitious.
He had known she disliked how completely Lily had changed his schedule.
He had known she resented that their wedding had been postponed twice after the baby’s birth.
But resentment was one thing.
This was something else.
“She could have died.”
Adriana’s expression remained cold.
“She didn’t.”
Victor’s hand moved before thought caught up.
The slap echoed through the marble hall.
Adriana stumbled backward.
Her heel caught against the raised edge of a floral display.
She fell into white roses.
Gasps moved through the guests.
Victor immediately hated that Lily would someday hear how he had handled the moment.
But he did not regret stopping Adriana.
He regretted losing control.
Adriana rose slowly.
One side of her face reddened.
Petals clung to her wedding gown.
Her eyes burned.
Victor expected screaming.
Instead she smiled.
That frightened him more.
“Go ahead,” she whispered.
“What?”
“Cancel the wedding.”
Victor stared.
“You think there is still a wedding?”
Adriana brushed a rose petal from her shoulder.
“Cancel it, and you lose your real heir.”
Victor stopped.
The words did not make sense.
Then they did.
And he rejected them.
“Lily is my only child.”
Adriana smiled again.
“No.”
Victor’s face became completely still.
She stepped closer.
“You have a son.”
The hall disappeared around him.
“What did you say?”
“A boy.”
Victor’s voice dropped.
“Name.”
Adriana said nothing.
“Name.”
She leaned toward him.
“If you want to meet him, you’ll finish what we started today.”
Victor looked at the white gown.
The rings.
The priest waiting in the private chapel for the final legal blessing scheduled after the reception.
Adriana truly believed he would marry her after she endangered Lily.
That belief told him she thought the secret was powerful enough to control him.
Victor stepped closer.
“Who is he?”
“Someone you should have known about seventeen years ago.”
A cold memory moved through him.
Seventeen years.
A woman named Elena Rossi.
His first love.
A disappearance nobody in the family ever explained properly.
Victor stared at Adriana.
She saw recognition.
And smiled.
May you like
That was her mistake.
Because Victor now knew where to begin.
