Chapter 14

Three years passed.

Fiona was five.

She did not remember the birthday party as one continuous event.

She remembered frosting.

Red on white.

A loud room.

Her mother’s green sweater.

And not liking when adults touched her face.

Jessi never forced more memory.

The ruined cake photograph existed in the police file.

Fiona never saw it.

The stew-stained shirt disappeared years ago.

The physical objects mattered less than the family story built around them.

Jessi completed the divorce.

She kept no ownership in Little Harbor.

She wanted none.

Her financial settlement reflected ordinary marital assets, child support, and legal obligations.

No hush payment.

No special fortune.

She returned to work.

Built routines.

Learned how much of her marriage had been organized around preventing Luca and Wendy from becoming upset.

Fiona attended a completely unrelated preschool.

The first week, Jessi asked too many questions.

The director smiled gently.

“You are allowed to ask.”

That sentence nearly made Jessi cry.

Wendy finished her custodial sentence.

She remained outside Fiona’s life.

No cards.

No surprise visits.

No gifts through relatives.

She petitioned once for permission to send a birthday letter.

The court declined at that time.

She did not try again.

That relationship became effectively closed.

Luca was different.

His supervised visits slowly improved.

He learned to respond when Fiona said no.

If she did not want a hug, no hug.

If she wanted Jessi nearby during transitions, Jessi stayed within the structured plan.

He stopped saying:

“But I’m your dad.”

Instead:

“Okay.”

One afternoon Fiona spilled apple juice during visitation.

She froze.

Luca saw it.

He reached for paper towels.

“That’s what towels are for.”

Fiona watched him carefully.

Nothing happened.

No slap.

No lecture.

No grandmother.

She helped wipe it up.

The supervisor wrote only three words in the behavioral note:

May you like

Child remained relaxed.

For Luca, it was the most important evaluation he had received in years.
