Chapter 11

Maribel’s emergency guardianship petition was never filed.

Once the forged documents surfaced, no competent lawyer would touch the existing packet without independent review.

Elowen and Stellan remained Ivy’s legal parents.

No court removed her.

No agency declared Elowen unstable.

No hospital treated Maribel as a parent.

Those facts mattered.

The danger had been preparation and coercion, not a magical legal transfer.

Law enforcement focused on conduct that actually occurred.

The false email account.

The forged signature.

The fraudulent notarization.

Misrepresentations to Hearthstone.

Use of a document purporting to carry Elowen’s consent.

The creation of misleading caregiver records.

Attempts to build false evidence concerning postpartum incapacity.

Helen Cormack, the notary, cooperated.

She admitted Lucinda asked her to notarize what was described as a family planning acknowledgment.

Helen did not witness Elowen sign.

She relied on an electronic identity packet supplied by Maribel.

Improper.

Potentially criminal.

Her notary commission was suspended while the case proceeded.

Hearthstone conducted its own internal review.

It had never finalized an adoption.

Its staff had repeatedly asked for direct contact.

Still, the agency changed procedures.

No family intermediary could serve as the primary communication channel for an expectant parent.

Any purported consent had to be independently confirmed outside the presence of proposed adoptive family members.

Maribel was barred from continuing any placement process involving Ivy.

Then Lucinda’s assault case moved.

She had struck Elowen in front of multiple witnesses.

The slap left visible injury but no fracture.

Prosecutors filed a misdemeanor assault charge.

Lucinda’s lawyer suggested resolving it quickly.

Lucinda resisted because pleading would mean admitting she had lost control.

Eventually she accepted a negotiated resolution.

Stellan’s case was separate.

He completed diversion for throwing the cake at Maribel.

Community service.

Counseling.

Payment of Maribel’s documented urgent-care expenses.

No conviction after successful completion.

He did not ask Elowen to call the cake heroic.

She did not.

One night he asked:

“Do you wish I hadn’t done it?”

Elowen thought.

“I wish you had taken Ivy and me and walked away.”

Stellan nodded.

“Me too.”

Then she added:

“I’m glad you finally believed me.”

That hurt more.

Because the sentence contained the entire failure before the party.
