Chapter 7

The Monday probate filing never happened.

Adria’s lawyer sought an emergency extension.

The California beneficiaries joined.

The court appointed a temporary special fiduciary to preserve the jewelry trust while Bernice’s conduct was reviewed.

Bernice fought it.

She argued that family beneficiaries were exploiting a private wedding dispute to strip her of authority.

The judge asked one simple question.

“Can you presently identify the location and chain of custody of every trust asset?”

Bernice could not.

That ended the emergency hearing.

The temporary fiduciary took control of the remaining collection.

Harcourt & Lane froze all work.

Family members were instructed not to alter, sell, pledge, reset, or transfer any jewelry potentially belonging to the trust.

Then the old watch came back.

So did the bracelet.

Serena voluntarily surrendered her sapphire pendant for appraisal.

She cried when she did it.

Not because she wanted money.

Because the pendant had been her Christmas gift from her mother.

Now it had become evidence.

Adria returned something too.

The Victorian brooch.

Her own distribution had been recorded correctly.

She did not have to return it.

Still, she placed it into temporary fiduciary custody until the complete equalization review finished.

Bernice called her theatrical.

Adria answered:

“If we’re auditing your distributions, mine gets checked too.”

That shut down one line of attack.

Then the trust investigation found a pattern.

Bernice’s undocumented transfers almost always went to people who lived nearby and stayed socially close to her.

Serena.

A niece.

Bernice’s brother.

Family members who attended her holidays.

Those living farther away received little or nothing.

Bernice described that as honoring Eleanor’s relationships.

The trust called it unequal administration.

Motive became clearer.

Bernice did not believe she was stealing.

She believed she was correcting a document she considered too mechanical to understand the family.

That belief could explain her conduct.

It could not legalize it.

Then the special fiduciary found a draft letter saved on Bernice’s computer.

Addressed to the probate accountant.

Created Friday night.

During a private family wedding reception, the Eleanor Vale diamond ring was discovered missing from its presentation box. Hotel security identified a juvenile family member in proximity to the display. Police involvement will be determined based on family preference.

Adria stared.

Friday night.

Before the wedding.

Before the box was empty.

Before Callum stood anywhere near it.

The draft did not name him.

It did not need to.

Bernice had already told security which juvenile to watch.

The theft narrative existed before the supposed theft.
