Chapter 7

Lucinda’s financial defense became more sophisticated.

She did not deny using the family-support clearing account.

She argued Rocco had given her broad administrative authority over his personal and family obligations.

He had.

Years earlier, he signed a limited financial power of attorney allowing her to handle routine household payments, family-office transfers, insurance premiums, and emergency disbursements while he traveled or faced legal restrictions.

Did that authorize diverting child support?

No.

Did it authorize her to settle Adeline’s property rights?

No.

Did it authorize changing payee instructions?

Only for routine administrative reasons consistent with the underlying obligation.

Then came the refinance closing.

Lucinda produced a memorandum supposedly confirming Rocco approved accelerated satisfaction of Adeline’s lien.

It read:

Proceed with Cross payoff necessary for Ventresca House refinancing. Use available personal-family liquidity.

Rocco remembered saying something similar.

“That might be mine.”

Rachel asked:

“What did you mean?”

“Pay Adeline what we owe so the lien clears.”

“Did you authorize using child support?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize a forged lien release?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize paying your mother’s capital account before Adeline actually received the equalization amount?”

“No.”

The memo became another example of real authority being stretched into something else.

Then the lender’s investigation identified the title-company escrow statement.

It claimed Adeline received a $1.84 million wire at closing.

Destination account:

AC Settlement Custody

Beneficiary notation:

Adeline Cross

The account itself belonged to:

Ventresca Administrative Custodial LLC

Manager:

Lucinda.

The title company believed it was a lawyer-controlled or fiduciary account established for Adeline.

It was neither.

Funds entered.

Three days later, $1.31 million moved to Lucinda’s Legacy Holdings account.

The balance covered transaction expenses and replenished internal family-office accounts.

Adeline received zero.

The lender’s fraud unit now cared very much.

So did the title insurer.

Then the county clerk produced the lien satisfaction recording packet.

Cover letter:

Signed by Lucinda’s assistant.

Wet-ink Adeline signature:

Likely reproduced.

Notarial seal:

Real.

Notary acknowledgment:

False if Adeline never appeared.

The notary had died two years earlier, but her old journal had been preserved by the state notary regulator.

No Adeline Cross entry on the date of acknowledgment.

There was an entry for Lucinda.

Same afternoon.

The fraud mechanism was becoming less theoretical.

Then a federal prosecutor requested the Ventresca House loan file.

Rocco’s criminal attorney told him:

“If you voluntarily expand production, they may find unrelated restaurant transactions.”

“I know.”

“You have cash vendors in those years I do not like.”

“I know.”

“Then do not make decisions emotionally.”

Rocco looked through the glass at Milo and Felix attending their first therapist-supervised introduction session with him.

“I already spent five years letting convenience make them.”

His lawyer did not have a response.
