Chapter 1 - the frozen centerpiece

The sprawling estate of the Moretti family was transformed into a glittering winter wonderland. Bright cinematic Christmas video colors bathed the luxurious mansion courtyard in warm golden light, vibrant emerald greens, and rich crimson reds. Thousands of shimmering fairy lights dripped from the stone archways, elaborate pine wreaths adorned every grand window, and an enormous forty-foot Christmas tree stood in the center of the courtyard, heavy with crystal ornaments and glowing candles. Falling snow dusted the flagstones, adding a pristine layer of white to the extravagant outdoor holiday party.

Among the high-society guests gathered around heavy marble dining tables sat seven-year-old Eddie Moretti. Innocent, shy, and sweet, the young boy wore a bright red Christmas sweater, dark trousers, and neat sneakers. In his small hands, he held a beautifully wrapped holiday present, his rosy cheeks flushed with quiet excitement.

Suddenly, eleven-year-old Logan Moretti strutted over. Spoiled, arrogant, and wearing an expensive tailored Christmas suit with polished leather shoes, Logan smirked down at his younger cousin. Without a word, Logan snatched the present right out of Eddie's hands, dropped it onto the snow-dusted ground, and stomped on it with his heavy boot, crushing the delicate wooden toy inside.

Before Eddie could even register the loss, Celeste Moretti stepped forward. Forty-one years old, sophisticated, beautiful, manipulative, ruthless, and bitterly cold, Victor’s sister-in-law wore an extravagant emerald silk Christmas gown that trailed along the stone floor, paired with a blinding diamond necklace, matching earrings, and high heels. Her fair skin was framed by sculpted golden hair.

With a cruel smirk resting on her painted lips, Celeste grabbed Eddie by his sweater, pulled him roughly away from the family dining table, and shoved him backward onto the cold, snowy lawn.

"My son gets Christmas. Yours gets leftovers," Celeste sneered, her voice dripping with aristocratic condescension.

Before Logan or Celeste could take another step, a terrifying shadow tore across the courtyard.

Caesar, Victor’s massive Rottweiler guard dog, vaulted over a stone bench. Calm, highly trained, fearless, and extremely protective of Eddie, the massive black-and-tan dog planted his heavy paws firmly in front of the fallen boy. Caesar bared his teeth, lowered his broad chest, and let out a deep, low growl that vibrated through the stone floor.

Celeste gasped, her smirk evaporating as she reflexively stepped backward, her designer heels slipping on the frost.

Through the heavy grand oak doors of the mansion emerged Victor Moretti.

Feared and immensely powerful, the legendary Mafia boss commanded total, terrifying stillness wherever he stepped. Broad-shouldered, muscular, rugged, deeply masculine, and frighteningly composed, Victor moved with the deliberate grace of a apex predator. He wore a custom midnight-black suit, a dark dress shirt, a luxury gold wristwatch, and immaculate polished shoes. His fair, rosy skin framed a stern, battle-hardened face that knew no fear.

Victor’s sharp eyes immediately took in the scene: Caesar shielding his small son, the crushed gift in the snow, and Celeste standing over the boy.

Victor strode across the courtyard. Eddie scrambled up, tears welling in his innocent eyes, and clutched the long tail of Victor’s midnight-black suit coat.

"She says Logan replaces me," Eddie cried softly, his small voice trembling against the cold winter air.

Victor didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. Instead, he smoothly reached down, handed Eddie off to his senior bodyguard standing nearby, and turned toward Celeste.

Walking straight up to Celeste’s central dining table, Victor reached out with his broad, calloused hand and gripped the base of the enormous crystal Christmas centerpiece—a massive bowl overflowing with carved ice sculptures, frozen berries, and chilling water.

Without breaking eye contact, Victor lifted the heavy centerpiece and dumped the entire ice-filled contents directly over Celeste’s head and expensive emerald gown.

Celeste shrieked as ice-cold water and heavy slush drenched her styled hair, diamond necklace, and silk dress. The impact knocked her off balance, sending her stumbling backward until she crashed into a padded outdoor lounge chair, soaked, freezing, and humiliated in front of fifty elite guests.

The entire courtyard went completely silent. The only sound was the crackle of the courtyard fireplaces and the soft rustle of falling snow.

Celeste scrambled to her feet, shaking with rage, her soaked emerald dress clinging to her body, her eyes burning with pure, venomous hatred.

"Keep that boy, and you lose the Moretti bloodline," Celeste threatened, her voice a low, lethal whisper that carried across the frozen air.

Victor slowly turned toward Eddie. Caesar moved closer to the boy, resting his broad head beside Eddie's knee.

Victor’s eyes locked onto Celeste with terrifying, absolute stillness.

"What did you do to his birth records?" Victor asked, his voice ice-cold.

Celeste froze, the color draining from her face faster than the melting ice on her dress.
