Chapter 10

Marcella did not place Elsie with Vincent out of mercy.

That was the major twist.

She placed Elsie with him because Vincent was the safest cage.

If Elsie went to an outside adoptive family, one honest record, one medical question, or one frightened witness could eventually connect her to Serena.

If Elsie stayed hidden in a facility, she remained a living loose end.

If Elsie was harmed, Serena’s disappearance became far more dangerous if anyone uncovered it.

But if Elsie became Vincent Corvino’s beloved daughter, everything changed.

The most feared man in the family would protect the child without asking where she truly came from.

His criminal reputation would discourage outsiders from digging.

His love would make him afraid of any truth that could threaten the adoption.

And if the truth ever surfaced, Marcella could use the same threat she used at the banquet:

Open it, and you lose your daughter.

The first clue was Marcella arranging the original adoption through a false birth identity.

The second was her public campaign calling Elsie fake blood while privately intercepting the DNA report.

The third was Serena refusing to sign adoption papers before the Marie Ellis documents appeared.

The fourth was the forged affidavit portraying Marcella as Serena’s protector.

The fifth was Marcella’s message:

Tell Vincent he can still keep her if he stops digging.

Marcella’s plan was not simply to deny Elsie’s bloodline.

It was to control the legal meaning of it.

Elsie was Serena’s daughter.

That gave Elsie standing one day to reopen Serena’s estate, Serena’s missing-person file, and Serena’s attorney records.

Those records threatened Marcella’s laundering network, Matteo’s vendor schemes, and the St. Brigid cover-up.

By making Vincent the adoptive father, Marcella turned the child into leverage against him.

If Vincent asked too many questions, he risked exposing adoption fraud.

If he exposed adoption fraud, a court might review custody.

If custody was reviewed, his Mafia history could be used against him.

So Marcella counted on the strongest force in Vincent’s life—his love for Elsie—to keep him silent.

What she miscalculated was Elsie herself.

A seven-year-old saw an envelope with her initials.

A seven-year-old saved it from the fire.

A seven-year-old handed it to the only father she knew.

Marcella built the lie around adults.

She forgot children notice when grown-ups are afraid.
