Chapter 6 - the net tightens

The temperature in the private gallery plummeted instantly. Clara turned to Dante, her heart seizing with pure terror. "What did you say? Sarah? Why would anyone take Sarah?"

Dante stepped into the room, holding up his phone. "A black van pulled up outside her building twenty minutes ago. Two men forced their way into her lobby. The building superintendent tried to intervene; they knocked him unconscious and dragged Sarah into the vehicle. Our street spotters caught the license plate. It belongs to a dummy corporation tied to Marco Falcone."

"No," Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes wide with horror. "Sarah has nothing to do with any of this! She was just warning me not to approach table four! She was terrified of you!"

Ricardo’s face transformed into an expression of absolute, terrifying calculation. The vulnerability he had displayed moments earlier vanished completely, replaced by the cold, lethal mind of a warlord. He walked past Clara toward Dante, his voice dropping into an icy register that made the hairs on the back of Clara’s neck stand up.

"Falcone knows Clara was working at L’Aura," Ricardo analyzed calmly. "He saw Clara disappear into my car. He couldn't find Clara at her apartment because we swept her place clean before sunrise. So he went for the next best thing—the girl who was standing beside her on the floor."

"What are they going to do to her?" Clara cried, rushing forward and grabbing Ricardo’s arm. Her fingers dug into the charcoal cashmere of his sleeve. "Ricardo, please! Sarah is innocent! She’s twenty-eight years old, she volunteers at animal shelters, she’s terrified of her own shadow! If they hurt her because of me, I will never forgive myself!"

Ricardo looked down at her small hand gripping his arm. In all his years, no one had ever dared lay a hand on him in distress, let alone demand action from him. Yet there was no fear in Clara’s eyes—only fierce, protective desperation for her friend.

He covered her hand with his own broad, warm palm. "Listen to me, Clara. Falcone did not take her to hurt her immediately. He took her to ask questions. He wants to know who you are, what your connection is to me, and why my son clung to you. He expects me to reach out. He expects an exchange."

"Then give him whatever he wants!" Clara pleaded, tears spilling over her rosy cheeks. "Money, territory, whatever it is!"

"In our world, Clara, if you give an enemy what he wants the moment he takes a hostage, he will take two more tomorrow," Ricardo said firmly. "You do not negotiate from weakness. You strike with such overwhelming force that they regret ever breathing your name."

He turned to Dante. "Mobilize the tactical units. Lock down every Falcone warehouse along the Brooklyn docks. Shut down their transit routes in Queens. Cut off their port access by noon. I want Marco Falcone suffocating before lunch."

"Understood, boss," Dante nodded, turning to leave.

"Wait!" Clara shouted, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "If you attack them, they’ll kill Sarah out of panic! You know they will!"

Ricardo paused, looking at Clara’s distraught face. "Clara, this is how these matters are resolved."

"No!" Clara stepped in front of him, blocking his path. "You think everything in this world is solved with violence and fear! That's why your wife lived in terror! That's why your son screams in the dark! Because all you know how to build are iron walls and war!"

Dante froze at the door, stunned by her audacity. Men had been executed for speaking a fraction of those words to Ricardo Moretti.

Ricardo stood motionless, his jaw clenched, his eyes burning into Clara’s. The silence in the hallway was deafening. But instead of the explosive fury Dante anticipated, Ricardo took a slow, deep breath, reigning in his formidable temper. He looked at Clara, seeing the raw, unyielding courage that refused to bow to his terror.

"If you don't want a war, Clara," Ricardo said slowly, "then give me an alternative."

Clara swallowed hard, her mind racing through every psychological principle she had learned during her years in trauma clinics. "Falcone took Sarah because he wants information about me. He thinks I am a secret weakness, someone you are hiding. If we hide, we confirm his suspicion. We need to control the narrative."

Ricardo’s brow furrowed slightly. "Explain."

"Let me speak to him," Clara said, her voice trembling slightly but gaining strength. "Call his phone. Let me tell him that I am Elena’s estranged cousin, that I was simply returning a family heirloom to you, and that the Moretti family owes me nothing. Make him believe that Sarah knows nothing because there is nothing to know. Offer him a peaceful out before your men close in."

Ricardo stared at her, genuinely taken aback by the sharp, analytical mind working behind those gentle hazel eyes. She wasn't just compassionate; she was brilliantly strategic under pressure.

"Falcone is a hyena, Clara," Ricardo said quietly. "He does not listen to reason from civilians. But... you gave me an idea."

He looked at Dante. "Get Marco Falcone on the secure line. Right now."

Dante tapped the screen of his tablet, initiating an encrypted call. After four long rings, a rough, arrogant voice crackled through the speaker.

"Moretti," Marco Falcone chuckled, the sound grating and oily. "I hear you picked up a new stray from Midtown last night. And here I thought you were still mourning poor Elena."

Ricardo took the phone, his voice dropping into pure, resonant steel. "Marco. You have five minutes to release Sarah Miller unharmed at the corner of 5th and 59th."

Falcone laughed loudly. "Or what, Ricardo? You’ll shoot up another warehouse? I have the girl. And soon, I’ll find out who your little brunette waitress really is."

"You don't need to ask the girl," Ricardo replied smoothly, his eyes never leaving Clara’s face. "The woman you are looking for is Clara Bennett. She is the direct niece of Francesca Rossi, Elena’s rightful bloodline. She is not a stray, Marco. She is my betrothed."

Clara’s eyes went wide in absolute shock.

On the other end of the line, Falcone’s laughter choked into dead silence.

"You took a woman who carries the Rossi bloodline and works under my personal protection," Ricardo continued, each word cold as an executioner's blade. "In three minutes, five hundred armed men will descend upon your estate in Long Island. If Sarah Miller has a single scratch on her fair skin, I will dismantle the Falcone family brick by brick before sundown. Drop her on 5th Avenue. Now."

Ricardo ended the call and tossed the phone back to Dante without waiting for a reply.

He turned back to Clara, whose mouth was slightly open, her chest heaving with shock.

May you like

"What... what did you just do?" Clara whispered.

Ricardo adjusted his cashmere cuffs calmly. "I just saved your friend’s life. But I also made you untouchable."
