Chapter 10 - a promise kept

The penthouse was completely silent at midnight.

Savannah stood in the guest bedroom, her small canvas tote bag packed and sitting by the door. She had folded her pale blue-and-white hotel uniform neatly on the dresser, laying her silver name badge on top of the fabric.

Beside the badge, she placed a fresh, carefully folded white towel rabbit.

A farewell gift for the little boy who had healed her broken heart.

She wiped a single tear from her cheek, zipped her tote bag, and turned toward the door. She knew if she stayed until morning, she would never be able to leave. She had fallen in love with Leo. And God help her, she had fallen hopelessly, completely in love with Dominic Moretti.

But Dominic belonged to an empire of power, influence, and bloodlines. She was just a girl who folded towels, a girl who had stepped into their world to bridge a gap that was now firmly closed. Leo had his voice; he had his father. She didn't want to become another complication in their dangerous life.

Savannah slipped out into the dim hallway, her shoes making no sound on the thick runner. She reached the elevator vestibule and pressed the call button, watching the glowing numbers light up as the elevator rose from the lobby.

The chime rang softly. The doors slid open.

Savannah took a breath and stepped forward—

"Vannah!"

Savannah froze. Her heart slammed against her ribs.

She turned around.

Standing at the end of the long hallway was Leo. He was wearing his favorite pale pink pajamas, clutching the fresh towel rabbit against his chest, his eyes wide and brimming with tears.

"Don't go," Leo cried out, his voice clear, heartbreaking, and loud in the midnight stillness. "Please, Vannah! Don't go!"

Behind him, emerging from the shadows of the master suite, walked Dominic.

Dominic was barefoot, wearing a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, his dark hair disheveled from sleep. But his intense blue-gray eyes were wide awake, locked onto her with a fierce, desperate certainty that rooted her to the spot.

Savannah’s bag slipped from her fingers, dropping to the floor. "Leo…"

The boy ran toward her, his small feet flying across the carpet, and threw his arms around her waist, burying his face in her stomach, sobbing with all the passion of a child who refused to lose the person he loved most in the world.

Savannah fell to her knees, wrapping her arms around Leo, kissing his hair as her own tears fell freely. "Oh, Leo… baby, I’m so sorry. I didn't want to wake you."

Dominic walked down the hall, his footsteps measured, powerful, and deliberate. He stopped two feet away from where she knelt, looking down at her with an expression so raw, so stripped of armor, that it stole the breath from her lungs.

"You think you can just leave?" Dominic asked, his voice rough and thick with emotion.

Savannah looked up at him through her tears. "Dominic, my thirty days are over. He has his voice back. He doesn't need me anymore—"

"I need you," Dominic cut in, his voice cracking with a vulnerability that Dominic Moretti had never shown to another living soul.

He sank down to both knees on the carpet in front of her. He reached out, his large, inked hands gently cupping her tear-streaked face. His thumbs wiped away her tears with agonizing tenderness.

"You think this was about a contract?" Dominic whispered, leaning so close their foreheads almost touched. "You think I brought you into my home, into my son’s heart, into my life, just to watch you walk back to that hotel?"

"Dominic, your world… it's so big, so dangerous. I’m nobody—"

"Don't ever say that," Dominic commanded softly, his blue eyes burning into hers. "You are everything. You brought light into a darkness I thought would bury me alive. You gave my son his life back. You gave me back my soul."

Leo reached between them, taking Dominic’s hand and placing it over Savannah’s hand, pressing their fingers together. The boy looked up at his father, then at Savannah, his little face radiant with absolute certainty.

"Stay," Leo whispered, his hazel eyes shining. "Please, mama."

Savannah’s breath hitched. A fresh wave of tears spilled down her cheeks, but this time, they were born of pure, radiant joy.

Dominic smiled—a genuine, breathtaking smile that transformed his handsome, rugged face—and leaned down, pressing his lips softly, tenderly against Savannah’s.

The kiss was sweet, warm, and filled with the promise of a hundred tomorrows. It was the taste of rain giving way to morning sun, the taste of safety after years of war, the quiet certainty that neither of them would ever have to stand alone again.

When Dominic pulled back, his hand remained tangled in her hair, his thumb resting against her rosy cheek.

"Stay with us, Savannah," Dominic murmured, his voice thick with devotion. "Be my wife. Be his mother. Let me spend the rest of my life protecting you the way you protected him."

Savannah looked from Dominic’s loving, intense gaze down to Leo’s beaming, expectant face. She felt the heavy weight of her past, her grief, and her loneliness lift away into the warm night air of the penthouse.

May you like

She leaned in, resting her forehead against Dominic’s chest, her arms wrapping tightly around both the father and the son.

"I’m staying," Savannah whispered. "I’m home."
