Chapter 7 - Valerie’s Story About Me

Dad found emails.

Not by breaking into her accounts.

Through a family-care portal he was already authorized to access.

Valerie had written to Leo’s social worker:

I am increasingly worried Evan’s behavior is unsafe.

Then:

Daniel minimizes it because he feels guilty about Evan losing his mother.

Another:

I may need guidance on whether the boys should be separated when Daniel isn’t home.

There had never been a formal allegation of abuse.

No report to police.

No child-protection investigation.

Just a slow accumulation of concern.

Enough that, if something happened to Leo while I was alone with him, adults might begin from the question:

Was Evan responsible?

Grandpa read the messages.

Then said:

“She was preparing a version.”

Dad asked:

“A version of what?”

Grandpa looked at him.

“Our family.”

Valerie had been telling professionals:

Evan unstable.

Leo vulnerable.

Dad in denial.

Valerie overwhelmed.

She was positioning herself as the only reliable adult in the story.

Not because she had a secret financial plan.

Not because of inheritance.

Control.

She wanted professionals to see the household through her interpretation.

Then the monitor recording showed the opposite.
