Chapter 10 - The golden cage

Three months later.

The Amalfi Coast sparkled brilliantly under the Italian sun. The Duca family's private villa sat high on a cliff, overlooking the crystal-clear azure waters of the Mediterranean. It was a paradise, a stark contrast to the dark, violent streets of New York.

Elena stood on the massive stone balcony, the warm sea breeze blowing her long brunette hair back. She wore a simple, elegant white summer dress. On her left ring finger sat a massive, flawless diamond ring that caught the sunlight perfectly.

She leaned against the stone railing, watching the scene below.

Down on the manicured green lawn, Lorenzo was running. The terrifying, emotionally guarded mafia boss was sprinting across the grass, laughing a deep, genuine laugh as he chased a giggling Mia. The little girl wore a yellow sundress, holding her plush bunny high in the air as she tried to outrun her father.

Lorenzo caught her effortlessly, swinging her up into the air and spinning her around until her laughter echoed off the cliffs. He held her tight, kissing her cheeks, completely oblivious to the world outside his family.

Elena smiled, a profound, overwhelming sense of peace washing over her. She had spent four years running in terror, hiding in the shadows, scrubbing floors in the very house she belonged in. Now, she was the matriarch of the most powerful empire in America, entirely untouchable.

Lorenzo set Mia down, pointing up at the balcony. Mia waved frantically. Mommy! Daddy caught me!

I see that, my brave girl! Elena called back, her heart swelling.

Lorenzo walked up the stone stairs to the balcony, his white linen shirt unbuttoned halfway, his chest heaving slightly from the run. He looked incredibly handsome, the dark, dangerous aura replaced by a fierce, devoted love.

He stepped up behind Elena, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, looking out at the endless blue ocean.

Are you happy here? Lorenzo murmured softly, kissing the side of her neck.

Elena leaned back into him, covering his large, tattooed hands with her own. I am happier than I ever thought possible, Lorenzo. We have peace.

Lorenzo was quiet for a moment, holding her tighter. The syndicate is stable. The Morettis are a memory. But you know this world, Elena. Peace is just a pause between wars.

Elena turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck. She looked up into his dark, intense eyes. The naive, terrified maid was completely gone. In her place stood a woman forged in fire, ready to protect her bloodline at any cost.

Let them come, Elena whispered fiercely, a breathtaking, confident smile crossing her lips. We destroyed the last people who tried to tear us apart. If anyone else wants to try, they will find out exactly why they call me the Queen of the Duca family.

Lorenzo’s sharp jawline broke into a brilliant, proud smile. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of the sea and absolute victory.

Down below, Mia cheered, hugging her bunny.

The mansion in New York was a fortress, but this villa was their home. The secrets were entirely exposed, the enemies vanquished, and the golden cage had finally been broken open. They were untouchable.

For now.
