Chapter 3 - The midnight deadline

The heavy oak doors of Nicholas’s private study shut firmly, locking the chaos of the foyer outside. The room was rich with dark wood, lined with antique books, and bathed in the warm, bright glow of a modern chandelier. Nicholas set Lucy gently on a plush leather sofa, handing her the worn stuffed rabbit she had dropped in the hallway. Maria stood nervously near the door, her delicate features tight with anxiety, her hands trembling against her dark skirt.

Marco stood at the door, his earpiece glowing faintly. "I have confined Vivienne to the east wing guest room, sir. She is demanding to speak with you."

"Let her wait," Nicholas said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. He turned his attention to Maria. "Why were your bags packed, Maria? You have lived safely in this house for twenty-nine days. Who gave you the order to leave?"

Maria shook her head rapidly, her blue eyes wide. "I didn't pack them, Mr. Moretti. I was in the kitchen preparing Lucy's lunch. When I came back up to our room, the suitcase was already at the door, and Miss Vivienne was grabbing Lucy. I swear to you, I had no intention of leaving."

Nicholas crossed the room, pouring a small glass of water and handing it to Maria to steady her nerves. His mind was working rapidly. Vivienne had always been calculating, but she was never reckless. To lay hands on a child inside his walls meant she was driven by pure desperation. And her mention of midnight meant there was a ticking clock he knew nothing about.

Marco pressed a finger to his earpiece, listening intently for a moment before looking up at his boss. His disciplined professional demeanor broke into a look of deep confusion.

"Boss," Marco said quietly. "My men just reviewed the security footage of Maria's hallway. Vivienne didn't pack those bags. She was in the garden the entire time."

Nicholas narrowed his eyes. "Then who went into Maria's room?"

Marco hesitated, a rare sign of uncertainty. "According to the cameras, absolutely no one."
