Chapter 12

Corinne's abuse of Sadie was handled separately.
The gala footage showed the water being poured over the child.
It showed Daphne being shoved.
It showed Corinne trying to move Sadie's wheelchair after Alistair approached.
Sadie's therapist documented earlier incidents of isolation, threats, and removal of her mobility equipment.
Staff statements supported parts of the account.
Corinne's attorney argued that she had been attempting to establish household discipline.
The argument failed to excuse the conduct.
Corinne faced criminal and civil consequences tied to the assaultive behavior and mistreatment investigators could substantiate.
She surrendered the engagement ring.
Moved out of the Montelli estate.
And was barred from contacting Sadie.
Her financial connection to Alistair ended under the applicable agreements.
Alistair's own use of force was reviewed.
The footage showed him removing Corinne's hands from the wheelchair and pushing her into a padded chair.
Investigators distinguished his intervention to prevent Sadie from being moved from any unnecessary force after the immediate threat ended.
He cooperated fully.
He also began counseling to address how quickly anger could become physical.
Sadie noticed.
One evening, she asked:
“Did you get in trouble for pushing Corinne?”
Alistair sat beside her wheelchair.
“People checked what happened.”
“Because you pushed her?”
“Yes.”
“But she was taking me.”
“I stopped her from moving your chair.”
“And then?”
“I pushed her harder than I needed to.”
Sadie thought about that.
“Were you mad?”
“Very.”
“Because she was mean to me?”
“Yes.”
Sadie looked down.
“I'm glad you came.”
Alistair took her hand.
“So am I.”
She squeezed his fingers.
“But next time, just stop her.”
He nodded.
“That's the plan.”
Daphne stood in the doorway.
She had cared for Sadie since the child was born.
For months, Corinne had made her feel that protecting Sadie might cost her everything.
Now the household had changed.
Daphne's authority was written into a formal care plan.
Sadie's mobility equipment could not be removed as punishment.
No adult could isolate her or threaten her access to caregivers.
Staff had an independent reporting channel.
Alistair made the rules public within the household.
One relative complained that the procedures were excessive.
May you like
Alistair answered:
“They're only excessive if you believe a child should have to earn the right to feel safe.”
