Chapter 9 - The Toxin and the Key

Grace backed away from the window, her hands trembling as she pointed toward the glass. "You built a pharmaceutical research lab under your mansion?"
"My father built it," Liam corrected, his voice raspy as he reached for a glass of water on his nightstand. "Thirty years ago, the syndicate used it to manufacture synthetic narcotics. When I took control of the Mercer family six years ago, I shut down the drug operations. I hired immunologists, geneticists, and specialists from around the world to convert the facility."
"To make cancer drugs?" Grace asked, her voice tight with disbelief.
"To make the only drug that can cure the genetic blood disorder that killed my younger sister ten years ago," Liam said, his icy eyes darkening with a profound, buried grief. "The same disorder your brother Jamie was born with."
Grace felt tears sting her eyes. The monster, the ruthless mafia boss who threw glassware at her head and ruled the city's underworld with an iron fist, was running a secret war against time to save innocent children.
"Why hide it?" Grace asked, taking a step toward the bed. "Why the armed guards? Why the dark room?"
"Because the syndicate council doesn't care about sick children, Grace," Liam said coldly. "They think that lab is holding fifty million dollars in pure, uncut fentanyl. The men who attacked us tonight weren't rival mobsters. They were hired by my own board of directors. They want to breach the vault, take the cargo, and destroy the research."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the sickroom pushed open.
Dr. Evelyn Shaw walked inside, carrying a small, silver tray containing a pre-filled syringe with a dark, amber liquid.
"It's time for his three o'clock sedative dose, Grace," Dr. Shaw said smoothly, stepping toward the IV stand.
Grace looked at Dr. Shaw, then down at the syringe in her hand. Her sharp medical eyes caught the small, faint air bubbles floating inside the thick amber solution—and the subtle, dark blue cap that indicated a high-concentration neurotoxin, not a standard hospital sedative.
Grace stepped between Dr. Shaw and the IV pole. "Doctor... that isn't his prescribed midazolam."
Dr. Shaw’s posture instantly locked up. "I changed his orders ten minutes ago, Nurse. Stand aside."
"Show me the vial," Grace demanded, her voice rising with sudden, lethal authority. "Show me the ampoule you pulled that from!"
Dr. Shaw didn't answer. Her hand twitched, reaching toward the open IV port above Liam’s bed.
"Leo!" Grace screamed at the top of her lungs.
Dr. Shaw lunged forward, trying to jam the needle directly into the rubber port of Liam's central line.
Grace moved with terrifying speed. She grabbed Dr. Shaw's wrist, twisting it back with all her strength. The glass syringe slipped from the doctor's gloves, crashing onto the hardwood floor and shattering into a hundred pieces. The amber liquid hissed softly as it touched the varnish, bubbling against the wood.

Liam reached out with his massive left arm, grabbing Dr. Shaw by the lapels of her white coat and dragging her down until her face was inches from his bandaged chest.
"Who paid you, Evelyn?" Liam growled, his voice vibrating with absolute, terrifying fury.
