Chapter 13

Claire agreed to one mediated meeting with Grant before his criminal case resolved.
No Noah.
No Logan.
Lawyers nearby.
Grant entered wearing a dark suit without the Bennett Response lapel pin he had worn for twenty years.
Claire noticed.
Said nothing.
Grant began:
“I never intended Logan to punch that hard.”
Claire looked at him.
“How hard was acceptable?”
Grant closed his eyes.
“Don’t.”
“No. Answer.”
“One controlled shot.”
“To a seven-year-old.”
“I thought Noah would block.”
“He had never trained.”
“I thought Logan would pull it.”
“Then why did it need to look real?”
Silence.
Claire leaned back.
“Because I needed to believe it.”
Grant looked at her.
“Yes.”
There.
“You needed me angry.”
“Yes.”
“You needed cameras.”
“Yes.”
“You needed me to hurt Logan.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
“I needed the board to see you weren’t objective anymore.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You wrote that before the fight.”
He said nothing.
She continued.
“So objective was never the standard. Obedience was.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
“Dad handed you everything.”
“No.”
“He handed you the votes.”
“He gave me a job.”
“He gave you authority over my son’s future while you were off being Colonel Bennett.”
Claire finally understood the older wound.
Grant had spent decades believing Samuel respected Claire more because of her military career.
Every promotion.
Every newspaper article.
Every family story about Claire overseas.
Grant heard:
You are less.
Then Logan’s career became his answer.
Strong son.
Visible son.
A Bennett man who could dominate rooms Grant believed Claire had stolen from him.
“You made Logan into your rebuttal to me,” Claire said.
Grant looked away.
“And Noah?”
Grant’s voice dropped.
“I thought the boy needed confidence.”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“You needed him weak enough to justify what Logan did.”
Grant looked at her.
For the first time, tears appeared.
“I love him.”
Claire believed that.
Which made it worse.
“You loved the version of him you thought you could improve.”
Grant said nothing.
She continued.
“And you loved Logan as long as his strength made you look right.”
Grant flinched.
“He’s my son.”
“Yes.”
“And you were willing to let him get arrested if it bought you sixty days.”
Grant lowered his head.
That ended the meeting.
Claire did not tell him she hated him.
May you like
She did not.
She simply no longer allowed blood relationship to function as access.
