Chapter 18 - Sarah’s new interview

The corrected employment reference mattered.
Sarah interviewed for:
Senior accounting manager at North Valley Medical Supply Cooperative.
Not my company.
No friend.
No favor.
The employer contacted Harrison HR.
Received corrected information.
Asked Sarah directly:
“Why were you terminated?”
She answered:
“I moved funds internally without authorization during a wage-control dispute. The company later concluded there was no evidence I took money personally and corrected my rehire status.”
Not perfect.
Credible.
Then:
“Would you do it again?”
“No.”
“What would you do?”
“Escalate independently and document.”
She got the job.
Salary:
$84,000.
Benefits.
Not executive wealth.
Enough for stability.
She called me after accepting.
“I got it.”
“I’m happy for you.”
“Don’t send anything.”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“You were thinking.”
“I was thinking dinner.”
She paused.
“With the kids?”
“Yes.”
“Public place.”
“Fine.”
We ate at a small Italian restaurant that had nothing to do with Harrison Dining.
Leo ordered spaghetti.
Mia ordered chicken and ate three bites.
Then Leo asked:
“Are you Mom’s dad?”
The table went quiet.
Sarah looked at me.
I answered:
“Yes.”
“Then you’re Grandpa?”
“If your mother is okay with that.”
Leo looked at Sarah.
She said:
“He is your grandfather.”
Leo accepted instantly.
Children do not understand nine-year estrangements unless adults teach them.
Then:
“Why didn’t we know?”
Sarah took the question.
“Because Grandpa and I had a big disagreement and stopped talking.”
“About money?”
“Yes.”
“Did Mom owe you?”
I swallowed.
“No.”
Leo looked at me.
“Did you owe Mom?”
Sarah almost smiled.
I answered:
“In some ways.”
“How much?”
“Not everything is money.”
He looked disappointed.
Then Mia asked:
“Do you have a pool?”
I did.
Sarah said:
“No moving in.”
I laughed.
For the first time, she did too.
Not forgiveness.
May you like
But laughter can exist before forgiveness.
That mattered.
