Chapter 1

The morning light that filled the living room of the grand estate was deceptively warm. Bright natural rays filtered through sheer white curtains, casting long, luminous rectangles across the polished dark hardwood floors. The room was a testament to quiet wealth and refined taste, with cream-colored walls, soft plush rugs, elegant sofas upholstered in neutral linens, and carefully arranged vases of fresh white lilies and blush roses resting on polished glass side tables. Warm table lamps glowed quietly in the corners, adding a golden ambiance to the sprawling space. Yet, despite the peaceful, sun-soaked atmosphere, a heavy, suffocating shadow hung over every square foot of the house.
Sitting near the edge of a large cream sofa was Daniel. At thirty-eight years old, Daniel possessed a broad-shouldered, athletic frame and sharp, masculine features that were now carved with profound emotional exhaustion. He wore a dark forest-green knitted sweater over a crisp white collared shirt, paired with tailored beige trousers. His thick, dark brown hair was styled in a slightly tousled, swept-back look, framing a sharp jawline shadowed by a few days of light stubble. His dark eyes, usually bright and calculating, were hollowed by fourteen months of unyielding grief.
Fourteen months had passed since his eight-year-old son, Noah, had vanished without a trace. It was a disappearance that had baffled local authorities, fractured Daniel’s world, and left behind an agonizing silence that no amount of passage of time could heal. Ever since that rainy autumn afternoon when Noah simply ceased to exist within the bounds of normal reality, Daniel had lived in a limbo between desperate hope and absolute despair.
A soft, plastic friction against the floorboards broke the heavy silence of the room.
Daniel lowered his gaze from the sunlit window down to the dark hardwood floor. Lying flat on her stomach near the base of the cream sofa was his six-year-old daughter, Lily.
Lily was a delicate, innocent little girl with long, slightly messy golden-blonde hair that tumbled over her shoulders. She wore a soft pink knitted cardigan over a pale-pink patterned dress, light-pink leggings, and clean white socks. Clutched tightly in her small, delicate hands was a bright pink toy stethoscope—a plastic plaything from a children's doctor kit.
With extraordinary, haunting stillness, Lily pressed the flat plastic chest-piece of the toy stethoscope firmly against the dark wood of the floor. Her small body was completely rigid. Her large, expressive blue-green eyes were wide with intense, unblinking concentration, staring fixedly at a spot on the floorboards just inches beneath the shadow of the sofa.
Daniel’s brow furrowed slightly. He moved with quiet, tentative grace, lowering his broad frame down onto one knee beside his daughter. He reached out a hand, hovering it gently above her pink cardigan, hesitant to break her trance.
"Lily?" Daniel murmured softly, his raspy voice laced with a gentle, aching concern. "Sweetheart, what are you doing down there?"
Lily did not immediately move. She remained pressed against the cold floor, her chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths. Then, with a slow, trembling motion, she lifted her head from the dark wood.
Tears glistened in the corners of her wide blue-green eyes. Her small hand shook as she pressed the pink plastic stethoscope even harder against the dark hardwood floorboards. She looked directly up into her father’s face, her delicate features contorted in raw, heartbreaking panic.
"Daddy..." Lily whispered, her innocent little voice trembling so violently it barely carried across the quiet room. "...Noah is crying down there."
The name hit Daniel like a physical blow to the chest.
The air in Daniel’s lungs vanished instantly. His dark eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing shock as his posture locked up. For fourteen months, Noah's name had been spoken in hushed, hesitant whispers, treated like delicate glass by everyone in their family. To hear his six-year-old daughter speak her missing brother's name with such absolute, terrified certainty sent a cold, terrifying shockwave directly down his spine.
Daniel dropped lower, bringing his face inches from Lily's trembling cheek. He carefully placed his broad palm flat on the soft fabric of her pink cardigan, trying to anchor her, trying to ground himself against the sudden, surreal terror rising in his throat.

"Sweetheart..." Daniel managed to say, his deep voice shaken to its core, struggling to remain gentle and calm despite the sudden pounding of his heart. "...what makes you think it's Noah?"
Lily’s breath hitched in a tiny, choked sob. She didn't lift her eyes from the floorboards. Instead, her small fingers tightened around the pink plastic tubing of her toy stethoscope, her small body shivering beneath the bright morning sun.
