Chapter 1

The afternoon sun streamed through the vaulted stained-glass windows of Ristorante Lucca, bathing the dining room in a warm, golden radiance. Crystal chandeliers glinted overhead, casting delicate prisms of light across pristine white tablecloths, vibrant blue velvet curtains, and lavish arrangements of white lilies and ivory roses. Classical violin music played softly over the quiet hum of high-society conversation, but near the secluded corner booth, a suffocating tension hung in the air.

Seated alone at the table was Adrian Moretti. At forty years old, Adrian was Chicago's most feared Mafia boss, an intimidating titan who had ruled the city's criminal underworld with iron discipline for nineteen years. He was tall, immensely muscular, and broad-shouldered, his physical presence dominating the space around him. His thick dark brown hair was swept back impeccably, framing a sharp masculine jawline shadowed by light stubble. Piercing dark eyes, cold and ruthlessly observant, scanned the pages of a local newspaper resting on the linen cloth. He wore a fitted black dress shirt with the top buttons open, exposing the intricate black ink of tattoos that covered his neck and upper chest before spiraling down his muscular forearms. A luxury gold-and-black watch gleamed against his wrist as his large, calloused fingers turned the page.

Standing two paces behind his right shoulder was Marco, his trusted security chief and loyal right-hand man. Tall, broad, and sharp-eyed, Marco wore a perfectly tailored dark suit, white dress shirt, and black tie. His hand rested subtly beneath the lapel of his jacket, his gaze sweeping every patron, server, and doorway with relentless vigilance.

Suddenly, the quiet rhythm of the afternoon was broken by the faint sound of small shoes stepping across the polished marble floor.

A seven-year-old girl named Clara stepped out from the main hallway and walked directly toward Adrian’s table without a single trace of hesitation. She was breathtakingly sweet, with golden-blonde hair styled into a slightly messy, elegant bun decorated with pale-yellow ribbons and tiny white flowers. Big, expressive brown eyes looked out from a delicate face with rosy cheeks. She wore a pale-yellow floral dress with ruffled sleeves and a matching yellow ribbon wrapped around her waist. In her left arm, she clutched a white plush bunny with floppy pink ears tightly against her chest. In her right hand, she held a single, crumpled twenty-dollar bill.

Marco’s posture shifted instantly into high alert. His hand tightened on his holster as he stepped forward to intercept the unexpected intruder, but Adrian raised one large, tattooed finger into the air, silently ordering his chief of security to stand back.

Adrian slowly lowered his newspaper onto the white tablecloth, his piercing dark eyes locking onto the little girl. Surprise flickered across his sharp features, quickly giving way to intense curiosity. He leaned forward, resting his chin against his tattooed fist, studying her fearless demeanor.

Clara stopped directly beside his table. With absolute determination, she extended her small hand, holding out the crumpled twenty-dollar bill toward the formidable crime lord.

"Can I hire you to protect me for one day?" Clara asked, her small voice serious, clear, and unwavering.

Adrian stared down at the crumpled bill, then back up into her big brown eyes. The absurd contrast between a seven-year-old girl and Chicago's deadliest mob boss would have been humorous to anyone else, but the stark, desperate fear hidden behind her brave expression did not escape his notice.

"Why do you need my protection?" Adrian asked, his deep, calm baritone echoing softly over the linen table.

Clara nervously glanced toward the restaurant’s enormous street-facing windows, her tiny fingers tightening around the plush bunny’s floppy pink ears. Her innocent composure faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by genuine terror. She leaned closer across the white tablecloth, lowering her voice to a frightened, urgent whisper.

"A strange man keeps following me," she murmured, her chest heaving slightly under her pale-yellow dress.

Adrian’s expression instantly turned cold and severe. He followed her glance toward the street outside, his sharp eyes scanning the pedestrian sidewalk through the sheer curtains.

He reached out and gently took the crumpled twenty-dollar bill from Clara’s small fingers. He looked at the worn paper, feeling the weight of a child's desperation, before his stern face softened with an unexpected, profound compassion. He gently pushed the bill back across the white tablecloth toward her.

"Keep your money," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a deep, unexpectedly gentle tone. "I'll protect you for free."

Clara immediately shook her head. She picked up the crumpled bill, reached across the table, and pressed the money directly into Adrian's tattooed palm, refusing to accept his charity. Her small, delicate fingers pressed hard against his calloused skin.

"Favors can be taken back," Clara stated with quiet, firm, and unusually mature clarity. "Contracts can't."

Adrian froze. His piercing dark eyes widened slightly as the little girl’s words sank into his mind. In nineteen years of ruling an empire, he had heard politicians, syndicate bosses, and lawyers talk about terms and agreements, but none had spoken with such sharp, unyielding conviction.

After a tense, breathless silence, Adrian slowly folded the twenty-dollar bill and slipped it carefully into his fitted black shirt pocket, right over his heart. He reached across the table and extended his large, heavily tattooed hand toward her.

"One day," Adrian agreed, his voice deep, serious, and fiercely protective. "Starting now."

For the first time, Clara’s tense shoulders relaxed. She reached out to take his fingers, but before her hand touched his, she stopped dead in her tracks.

Her eyes widened in unmistakable terror as she stared directly through the large restaurant window behind Adrian. Across the sunlit street, standing motionless near a lamppost, was a suspicious man in his mid-forties with short brown hair. He wore a tan overcoat with a fake-fur collar and brown leather shoes—the left shoe bearing a long, distinct white scratch across the leather. He held a paper coffee cup that he never raised to his lips, his cold, watchful eyes locked entirely onto Clara through the glass.

Clara gripped Adrian’s tattooed fingers with a sudden, violent tremble.

"That's him!" she whispered, her voice shaking with absolute horror.
