Chapter 3 - The fortress on the hill

The Moretti estate was a sprawling, impenetrable fortress of stone and steel, hidden behind massive iron gates on the highest hill overlooking the city. The armored SUVs glided through the heavily guarded entrance, coming to a smooth stop beneath the grand portico.
Calder carried Emma inside. The mansion was warm, opulent, and quiet, filled with expensive art and polished marble. He brought her to his private, fire-lit study, sitting her gently on a massive leather sofa. He immediately ordered his kitchen staff to bring warm soup, fresh bread, and hot tea.
Emma ate with desperate, silent hunger, her fair skin slowly regaining its healthy, rosy glow. She never once let go of her oversized brown coat, keeping it draped over her lap even in the warmth of the roaring fireplace.
Calder sat opposite her in a high-backed armchair, watching her with a calm, analytical gaze. He had built his empire on ruthlessness and absolute control, completely insulating himself from the vulnerabilities of compassion. Yet, the sight of this brave, innocent child sitting in his fortress stirred a fiercely protective, deeply masculine duty within him.
When Emma finished eating, she looked around the grand room, her gray-blue eyes wide with awe. “Are you a king?” she asked softly.
A faint, rare trace of amusement touched the corner of Calder’s mouth. “No. I am just a man who makes sure the rules are followed.”
Marco stepped quietly into the study, holding a secure tablet. He stood respectfully at a distance, knowing better than to alarm the child. Calder stood and walked over to his lieutenant, keeping his voice to an imperceptible whisper.
“The abandoned sedan was wiped clean, Boss,” Marco reported, his posture rigid and disciplined. “But we pulled a partial fingerprint off the interior door handle. It belongs to a Vance enforcer named Silas. He specializes in corporate extortion and high-level kidnapping.”
“Why would Silas target a mother and a child in my territory?” Calder murmured, his sharp mind connecting invisible dots.
“We ran facial recognition from the bakery’s security cameras,” Marco continued, pulling up an image on the tablet. “Her mother’s name isn't just Sarah. It’s Sarah Hayes. Five years ago, she was the lead forensic accountant for the national syndicate commission. She vanished without a trace, taking highly classified ledgers with her. The Vance family has been hunting her ever since.”
Calder’s eyes narrowed into a dangerous, lethal focus. Sarah Hayes held the financial secrets that could dismantle the entire Vance empire and topple the commission itself.

Calder looked back at Emma. She was struggling to stay awake, her small head nodding as she curled into the corner of the leather sofa.
“She isn't just a random target, Marco,” Calder said coldly. “She is leverage.”
