Chapter 6

The world seemed to stop spinning.

Alessandro stared at the photograph, then looked up slowly.

Emily stood by the bed, her face completely drained of color. She saw the photograph in his hand and pressed her knuckles against her lips, stifling a sob.

"You knew him," Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

"Alessandro, we don't have time for this—" Victor began from the hallway.

"Shut up, Victor!" Alessandro snapped, never taking his eyes off the young mother. He took three deliberate steps toward Emily, holding the photograph in front of her face. "You told the agency your husband died in a construction accident in Ohio. You told my head of staff you were a widow from Cleveland."

"I had to lie!" Emily cried, tears finally spilling down her burning cheeks. "If I told the truth, they would have killed us years ago!"

"Who would have killed you?" Alessandro demanded.

"The people who tried to murder Julian!" Emily dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms around Zoe, who began to cry softly, confused by the shouting. "I didn't know who he really was when we met in Italy. He told me his name was Luke. He told me he was an architect. We were together for eight months before he disappeared!"

Alessandro’s heart pounded against his ribs. Julian had spent four months in Milan three years ago on "family business" right before the Skyway bridge incident.

"When did you find out who he was?" Alessandro asked.

"Six months after he vanished," Emily whispered, rocking Zoe in her arms. "I was pregnant. Two men broke into my apartment in Boston. They didn't want money. They tore the walls apart looking for a flash drive. Luke had left me a safe deposit box key before he went missing. Inside was cash, this photograph... and a letter telling me that if anything ever happened to him, I had to find Alessandro Romano."

Alessandro stared at the child in Emily's arms.

Zoe’s curly brown hair. Her deep, observant brown eyes. The stubborn line of her jaw.

It wasn't a coincidence that the child looked familiar.

"Zoe is Julian's daughter," Alessandro stated. It wasn't a question.

"Yes," Emily wept. "She’s your niece, Alessandro. She’s the only thing left of your brother."

Before Alessandro could process the words, glass shattered on the ground floor below, followed by the muffled *thwip-thwip* of suppressed gunfire.

Vance’s men were inside the house.
