Chapter 7

"They're in the foyer," Victor barked, dropping into a low crouch in the hallway. "They just breached the conservatory doors."
Alessandro shoved the photograph into his breast pocket. All the confusion, the shock, the grief of the last three years suddenly crystallized into pure, lethal focus.
This child was Julian’s blood. She was a Romano.
"Victor," Alessandro said, stepping out into the hall. "Take the service elevator down to the basement. Escort Emily and Zoe into the vault."
Victor looked at him, his face pale in the strobe light. "Boss, you can't face three armed mercenaries alone in the dark."
"I'm not alone. It's my house," Alessandro replied coldly. He looked down at Zoe. The little girl reached out from her mother’s arms, holding up her battered teddy bear toward him.
"Take Barnaby," Zoe whispered, her voice tiny. "He protects me from the shadows."
Alessandro looked at the worn, patched bear. He gently pushed it back into her arms. "You keep Barnaby, little one. I don't need protection from the shadows. I am the shadow."
He turned to Emily. "Go with Victor. If he makes one wrong move, hit the emergency seal on the inside of the vault door. It locks from the inside only."
"Alessandro..." Emily grabbed his sleeve, her fingers burning hot with fever. "Julian told me you were ruthless. But he said you were the only man in Chicago who kept his promises."
"I keep my promises to family," Alessandro said. "Now move."
Victor guided Emily and Zoe down the narrow servant corridor toward the reinforced elevator. Alessandro waited until he heard the pneumatic hiss of the elevator doors closing.
Then he reached into the corridor’s hidden wall cabinet, pulling out a tactical shotgun loaded with non-lethal breaching slugs and high-density buckshot.
He didn't turn on the lights. He knew every turn, every creaking floorboard, every angle of this estate.
He moved silently down the west staircase toward the conservatory.
Through the darkness, he saw the tactical lasers of two rifles cutting through the dusty air of the grand gallery.
Two men in black tactical gear were moving in tandem toward the central staircase. Behind them, standing calmly near the marble statue of David, was Carter Vance, holding an open laptop linked to the mansion's deactivated grid.
"Find the child," Vance was saying quietly into his headset. "Leave the mother if you have to, but the girl is the key. Without her DNA, the trust in Zurich remains locked."

Alessandro leveled the shotgun from the darkness of the mezzanine.
"The trust is closed, Carter," Alessandro’s voice boomed through the high-ceilinged room.
