Chapter 5 - BLOODLINE

"Stand back!" Marco barked, drawing his weapon and aiming at the electronic keypad beside the door.

Before he could pull the trigger, the overhead speaker on the wall cracked to life with static. A distorted, synthesized voice filled the library.

"Good evening, Damian. You look pale. The poison takes time, doesn't it?"

Damian stepped in front of Mara and Lila, his gray eyes burning with cold rage. "Show your face, coward."

"You've spent four years hunting ghosts, Don Volkov. Looking for your dead brother, looking for your missing wife. But you never looked at what was right under your roof."

The voice paused, a chilling laugh filtering through the speaker.

"Ask the maid about the night of the crash, Damian. Ask her why she has Viktor's scar on her throat."

Damian turned his head sharply toward Mara. His eyes narrowed onto the silver line across her neck—a scar he had noticed earlier, but hadn't truly looked at until now. It was a perfectly straight three-inch surgical mark, identical to the trace left by a specific type of tracheostomy procedure.

"Mara," Damian said, his voice deadly quiet. "Who gave you that scar?"

Mara's eyes welled with tears as she shook her head frantically. "I don't know! I was in a car accident four years ago! I woke up in a hospital with no memory of the six months before it! The doctors said I survived a crash on Route 9!"

"She's telling half the truth, Damian," the voice mocked through the speaker. "Check her left wrist. Check the serial number tattooed under the skin."

Damian reached out, grabbing Mara’s arm. He pulled back the sleeve of her black housekeeping sweater.

Just above her pulse point, faint ink showed beneath her fair skin: V-049.

A Volkov private clinic intake code.

The electronic lock on the library door suddenly clicked green, unlocking itself. The overhead speakers went completely silent.

Marco shoved the door open, his gun raised, but the hallway outside was empty—except for a single white envelope lying on the Persian rug in front of the threshold.

Damian picked up the envelope. Inside was a single photograph, yellowed at the edges.

It showed a dark-haired woman holding a newborn baby in a hospital room. Standing next to her, smiling warmly, was a younger Marco Bellini.

And on the back of the photo, written in fresh black ink, were five words:

MARCO KNOWS WHO LILA IS.
