Chapter 9 - the garden of light

Three months later, a brilliant, warm morning sun shone over the manicured lawns of the Duca estate overlooking Lake Michigan.

The dark clouds that had shadowed the family for three long years were completely gone. Marcus Vance and Vivian Chen were serving life sentences in federal maximum-security prison, the shipping docks were fully consolidated under Lorenzo's control, and peace had returned to the mansion.

Out on the sunlit stone terrace, six-year-old Lucas ran across the green grass in a crisp white shirt and dark trousers—completely healthy, his cheeks rosy, his legs strong and fast as he played tag with three-year-old Emma.

Emma ran behind him in a pale-yellow dress, holding her stuffed rabbit, her bright laughter echoing warmly across the grounds.

Sitting at a white wrought-iron table on the terrace were Lorenzo, Sarah Carter, and Dr. Mara Quinn, enjoying fresh coffee and pastries.

Sarah watched the two children playing on the lawn, tears of pure happiness sparkling in her eyes. "Look at them, Lorenzo. It feels like a miracle."

"It wasn't a miracle, Sarah," Lorenzo smiled gently, taking a sip of his coffee. "It was your daughter's fearless heart."

Lucas ran up the stone steps of the terrace, jumping into Lorenzo's broad lap, breathing happily. "Daddy! Look how fast I can run now! I beat Emma to the fountain!"

Lorenzo laughed—a rich, handsome, genuine sound that transformed his rugged features—and hugged his son tightly against his broad chest. "You're the fastest boy in Chicago, Lucas."

Emma ran up behind him, hugging Lorenzo's leg. "Mr. Bunny says Lucas gets a gold star!"

Lorenzo reached down, lifting little Emma into his other arm, holding both children close as Sarah and Dr. Mara Quinn laughed with pure joy.
