Chapter 7 - sanctuary breached

The reprieve lasted less than two hours.
Back at the brownstone, the heavy lockbox lay open on the library table. Inside were not just records, but bank routing slips, encrypted USB drives, and contracts signed under Lorenzo’s private aliases. The evidence was undeniable: for twelve years, Lorenzo had skimmed nearly twenty percent of all family revenues into offshore dummy accounts, using the funds to quietly buy off local politicians, judges, and half the capos sitting on the family council.
"This is the kill shot," Kane said, scanning the documents into his terminal. "Once the underbosses see this, Lorenzo is finished. He won't have a single ally in the room."
Julian stood beside his brother, looking at the papers with a profound, bitter sorrow. "All that blood. All those years I spent hiding in basements like an animal. He did it for money."
"He did it for power," Damian corrected, his voice flat. "And power without honor is just poison."
Suddenly, the library lights flickered once, twice, and died.
The emergency red lamps clicked on along the baseboards, bathing the mahogany room in a crimson glow. Kane immediately drew his weapon, tapping his ear-comm. "Perimeter sensors just went dark. Main gate power was cut from the street."
"They followed us from the church," Damian realized instantly, his jaw tightening like an iron clamp. "Lorenzo’s men had a tracking beacon on the enforcers' vehicles."
A heavy thud echoed from the front terrace, followed by the muffled shatter of reinforced glass.
"They're bypassing the courtyard," Kane reported, checking a battery-powered security monitor. "Eight men. Heavily armed. Lorenzo isn't waiting for the noon meeting. He's trying to wipe the slate clean right now."
Damian didn't flinch. "Kane, take Julian and Beatrice to the boathouse tunnel. Move!"
"No," Julian said, his eyes suddenly burning with the fierce, long-dormant pride of the Moretti bloodline. He picked up a spare firearm from Kane’s tactical kit on the table, racking the slide with practiced ease. "I ran for twelve years, Damian. I hid in the dark while you carried the weight of this family alone. I am not running down another hole."
Damian looked at his older brother. The frailty, the exhaustion that had plagued Julian seemed to burn away, replaced by the lethal resolve of a man reclaiming his name.
"Together, then," Damian said, a dark, fierce smile touching the corner of his lips.
"Damian, please!" Beatrice cried out, catching his sleeve. Her eyes were swimming with tears, terrified for him. "There are too many of them!"
Damian turned to her. He reached up, his large, scarred hand gently cupping the side of her soft cheek. His thumb brushed over her high cheekbone.
"Listen to me, Beatrice," he said softly, his voice cutting through the rising chaos of gunfire echoing from the front foyer. "You brought my brother back from the dead. You gave me back my soul. You go with Kane. You stay safe. I will come back for you. I swear it on my life."
She looked at him, seeing the terrifying majesty of the man he was, and nodded through her tears. "You come back to me."
"Always," Damian whispered.
He pushed her gently toward Kane, who guided her toward the concealed bookcase door leading to the subterranean bunker.
As the secret door clicked shut, the heavy double doors of the library splintered inward under the impact of a tactical ram.
Lorenzo’s lead hitmen poured into the room, their weapons raised. But they weren't facing panicked targets.
Damian and Julian moved in terrifying, seamless coordination. The brothers who had ruled Chicago’s underground in their youth fought shoulder to shoulder. Damian fired with surgical, devastating precision, dropping the first two assailants before their feet hit the rug. Julian flanked the left, his tactical shots driving the remaining men back toward the corridor, cutting off their advance.
The roar of gunfire tore through the ancient library, splintering centuries-old mahogany and shredding antique leather volumes. Yet neither Moretti brother retreated an inch. Damian advanced like an elemental force, his dark overcoat billowing behind him, his cold eyes tracking every shadow.
Within ninety seconds, the assault was shattered. Lorenzo’s strike team lay disarmed, wounded, and neutralized across the shattered marble foyer.
Damian stood amidst the drifting smoke, his breathing steady, his tailored suit completely undamaged. He lowered his weapon and looked at Julian, who stood against the archway, holding his shoulder, breathing hard but smiling.
"You haven't lost your aim, little brother," Julian coughed.
"Neither have you," Damian replied.
Damian stepped over the fallen weapons and walked out onto the snowy front steps. The winter air rushed into his lungs, icy and clear.
He pulled out his phone. The screen showed it was 11:15 AM.
Forty-five minutes until Lorenzo’s council meeting at the downtown penthouse.
Damian dialed Kane’s private frequency. "Kane. Is she safe?"
May you like
"She's right here, boss," Kane’s voice came through, clear and relieved. "Safe in the bunker. Unharmed."
"Keep her there until I call," Damian said. "Julian and I are going downtown."
