Chapter 9 - reckoning on michigan avenue

The thirty-second floor of the Moretti Tower on Michigan Avenue boasted panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a frozen Lake Michigan. Inside the soundproof executive boardroom, twenty capos, underbosses, and financial directors sat around a massive oval table of polished black quartz.

At the head of the table sat Lorenzo Vale.

Lorenzo had stripped off his overcoat, sitting in his tailored charcoal vest, a heavy gold signet ring tapping rhythmically against the quartz.

"Gentlemen," Lorenzo said, his rough voice filling the room with manufactured gravity. "I called this emergency council because our leadership is compromised. Damian Moretti has spent the last three weeks acting erratically. He's neglecting our distribution hubs. He's disappearing into back alleys. And this morning, he authorized an unprovoked assault on one of our private facilities."

The men around the table exchanged nervous, uncertain glances. Lorenzo had spent months planting seeds of doubt, and now he was preparing to reap the harvest.

"The Moretti family needs steady hands," Lorenzo continued, leaning forward, resting his palms on the table. "I propose an immediate vote of transition. We place Damian on administrative leave, secure the accounts, and—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding, thunderous boom.

Every man at the table froze.

Damian Moretti walked into the boardroom. He wore a crisp, tailored black suit, his coat draped over his arm, his piercing eyes sweeping across the council like a scythe. Behind him, Kane stepped into the doorway, holding a slim leather portfolio.

Lorenzo’s face hardened, his hand twitching toward the concealed holster under his arm. "Damian. You're late for the meeting you didn't know about."

"I'm never late in my own house, Lorenzo," Damian said smoothly, his voice carrying an effortless authority that made three capos immediately lower their heads in deference.

Damian walked down the length of the table, his polished shoes clicking sharply against the floor. He stopped directly opposite Lorenzo.

"You called a vote of transition," Damian said, leaning forward, placing his hands on the quartz table, mirroring Lorenzo’s stance. "Let's make sure the council has all the facts before they cast their ballots."

Kane stepped forward, opening the leather portfolio. With swift efficiency, he slid thick, identical packets across the table in front of every single underboss.

"What is this garbage?" Lorenzo snapped, refusing to look down.

"That," Damian said calmly, "is the financial trail of Vance Lawrence. Twelve years of theft. Sixty million dollars stolen from the riverside warehouse in 2012. Two hundred million funneled into private shell companies in the Caymans. And the signed authorization for the arson of the Saint Jude parish shelter at 3:00 AM this morning."

A collective murmur erupted down the table. Vincent Falcone, the oldest capo in the family, flipped through the pages, his weathered face darkening with rage. "Lorenzo... what the hell is this? You signed these manifests?"

"It’s a forgery!" Lorenzo snarled, slamming his fist onto the table. "Damian is unhinged! He’s trying to purge the old guard so he can hand our empire over to charities and housekeepers! Look at him! He’s seeing ghosts!"

"He isn't seeing ghosts, Lorenzo," a deep, familiar voice called out from the doorway.

The entire boardroom turned.

Julian Moretti stepped into the light of the panoramic windows.

He was dressed in a sharp, dark suit provided by Kane, his silver-streaked dark hair combed back, his posture proud and upright. On his right hand, the Moretti onyx family ring caught the bright winter sunlight.

The room gasped. Vincent Falcone stood up so fast his chair clattered against the wall. "Julian... God in heaven... Julian?"

Lorenzo’s face drained of every ounce of color. The arrogant, untouchable lieutenant looked as though he had been struck by lightning. His mouth opened, but no sound emerged. His eyes darted frantically between Damian and the man he thought he had burned to ashes twelve years ago.

"You should have made sure of the body, Lorenzo," Julian said, his voice cold, steady, and devastating. "Twelve years in the cold. Twelve years watching you poison my family from the shadows. Your time is up."

Lorenzo’s mind snapped. Seeing his empire, his wealth, and his freedom disintegrate in a single second, he reached for his weapon.

Before his fingers could even clear the holster, Damian moved.

Damian’s hand shot across the quartz table like striking steel, catching Lorenzo’s wrist in an iron vise. With a sickening crunch of cartilage, Damian twisted Lorenzo’s arm downward, forcing the weapon from his grip. It clattered harmlessly onto the table.

With his other hand, Damian seized Lorenzo by the throat, hoisting the burly lieutenant halfway across the table until their faces were inches apart.

Lorenzo choked, his eyes bulging with terror, staring into the lethal void of Damian’s dark gaze.

"You stole my brother," Damian whispered, each word carrying the weight of a decade of grief. "You stole twelve years of my life. You tried to burn innocent children alive in their beds."

"Damian... please..." Lorenzo wheezed, his fingers clawing uselessly at Damian’s immovable forearm. "We built... this city together..."

"No," Damian said, his voice a quiet, final judgment. "You built a cage. And your sentence begins today."

Damian didn't pull a trigger. He didn't execute him in front of the council. He slammed Lorenzo down onto the quartz surface, pinning him flat as two federal agents, escorted by Kane’s private security, walked through the boardroom doors.

"Lorenzo Vale," the lead federal investigator announced, flashing his badge to the stunned room. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, racketeering, grand larceny, and the attempted murder of Julian Moretti."

Damian stepped back, releasing the traitor. Lorenzo lay on the table, gasping for breath, before being hauled to his feet and handcuffed. As they dragged him toward the elevators, Lorenzo glared at Damian with raw hatred.

"You're soft, Damian!" Lorenzo spat, his voice echoing down the hall. "You'll lose everything! You can't run this city with mercy!"

Damian smoothed the lapels of his suit, his face entirely serene. "I'm not running this city anymore, Lorenzo. I'm setting it free."
